Worse in some ways - more heroin, more corporates taking over the bars and venues, more bland coffee shops... but it's still a great town with a lot of great people. However it's also a really small town with a disproportinately large number of younger people with club/music interests, which means that it can get a bit claustrophobic / gossippy / incestuous / insane. But then again, lots of people do manage to get it together... There were loads of reasons I left, but I'd happily live there again.

more heroin...that's interesting. i don't know why but heroin seems to have a massive comeback, especially in east-germany lots of young people are addicted.

Well that's another story for another thread, which I will start in a second. Brighton has the worst rates of injecting heroin abuse of anywhere in the country.

I used to live in Brighton but found that working for TSB collections and living with 7 people in a 4 bed house wore a bit thin after a while. Still like the place though. I think the heroin thing is down to people being unemployed prefering to sign on somewhere picturesque rather than being skint in Birmingham. Its the same with mad folk on DLA

Bah my computer crashed.
Re the mad folk and general skanky incomers - haven't they passed some new local law that if you are homeless you're not eligible for housing if you can't prove "a strong link" with brighton i.e. you have lived there for years or have family there? |

I remember reading something to that effect some time in the last 2 years. Sorry can't be any more specific. I know it's been tried in other cities and has been successful, at least in reducing the street homeless population. I've always found the nutters were what gave Brighton its charm, but when the smackies started moving in en masse they really drove out a lot of the 'characters', replacing them with that generic whining, wheedling, bullshitting, cock-and-bull-story-telling scaghead non-personality.

Do you remember the lady with the dredlocks and filed teeth who would crawl across the trolleys at somerfield. She was quite rational when you talked to her, and she collected spoons

Um, skinny, middle-aged, reddish-brown dreads? She was sometimes very cool to chat to, but if she was wired she could be a nightmare, and she was always into fights.
One of my favourites was Hopalong The Mod, really tall geezer in a bomber jacket and cropped hair who had a pronounced limp but walked really really fast around the Western Road area with his head on one side, having really involved and seemingly very lucid conversations with himself. There was also the weird skinhead with the silver stickytape over his eyebrows, wild eyes, a duvet cover draped over his shoulders, and a tinny little ghetto blaster which only ever seemed to play 'smalltown boy' by Bronski Beat. Rumour was he was a nazi skinhead who someone had seen fit to spike with a fuckload of acid, which led to him seeing the error of his ways, covering his "NF SKINZ" facial tattoo with the sticky tape, and walking the streets as penitence. I tried to say hello to him once or twice but he didn't really respond. |

Wow....Anyway, back to junkies. You get a lot of people spend the majority of their lives getting fucked and blagging off the state who develop mental health issues..and wonder why! I'm sure the problems are more deep rooted in a socio-psychological sense but.. REALLY- why don't they just fuck off.

it's like the day a cake decorator took lsd.. and saw the error of his ways, started making music and drinking much vodka as penitence for his crimes to icing...

thats right, its the summer, i am a red coat in the summer - i especially enjoy hosting the nobbly knee competition, this year Ernest from Oldham won it, his knee's were very nobbly. tonight there is the summer ball, i hope the weather stays sunny, but it is generally fine down in sunny bognor - ![]() |
