you can run it on a lower spec card but of course it won't look as good. there are some minimum specs listed somewhere on line. I just can't remember where I saw them. I saw the trailer for the game on sunday and it truely looks amazing. it will be far and away the best video game for a pc, ever. I can't wait for it to come out on xbox. that probably won't happen until around x-mas. but thats ok because I will have my hands full with halo 2 when it comes out in november.

Doom 3 hardware FAQ

this link must be getting hammered because it was down last time I checked, but it's pretty useful.

Although it seems the nvidia cards are way better, the ati cards are aparrently going to be miles better on half-life 2, so take your pick over what you want more (hl2 for me, although i'm sure if I get an x800 I could run doom 3 pretty well)...

i only started playing, actually i'm too tired today for so much intense terror. well, i don't think it'll be the best game ever - best graphics for sure and an amazing experience, too. but an intelligent story counts as well, hl2 should indeed beat it in this regard, with less cliches etc. also there have been a few legendary games, not only hl1 but also system shock 2, deus ex or thief 3 which i just played - i don't expect d³ to beat them all at once. but it definitely is a technical milestone.

interesting review by that bald bloke Greg on gamespot.com .. he says the gameplay is pretty boring , but that it looks fucking amazing. more worrying is that he says the multiplayer is more like an afterthought , only 4players by default and no new multiplay ideas... Is there a Quake 4 on the way using this engine ?

yeah, a few of my friends that have it have said the same thing (I haven't played it myself), but it should make a good engine to be tweaked added to etc. to make good new fps' (much like the quake 3 engine was used for everything for a ages).....although I hear it does have quite a few pants-pooping moments....really to me it seems a lot like halo - just another fps

There is multiplayer capability for unlimited players. But ID have decided to 'take it back to the old school' and only enable it in the game for up to 4 players (exactly as the original Doom and Doom 2 had).

John Carmack says that there is nothing to stop modders from making it allow more (and there are a fair number of 16 player servers already on the net, despite the game not being out until tomorrow).

However, early reports from my friends (I have yet to play it) say that 4 play deathmatch is perfect in this game. Really quite scary. When you get the Beserker power up, you start screaming, and the screams carry very well down the corridors in the games.. putting you in the right frame of mind to shit your keks.

Who did the music, by the way? was it NIN as suggested early on?

yes, quake 4 is being developed by raven software under license from id, as well another game with the engine, probably (and hopefully) return to castle wolfenstein 2...

i guess there'll be plenty of multiplayer mods for d3, it has already begun.

haven't played any further since i just returned home again. most reviews are like 95% or close, but some indeed complained about the 'very old skool' level design.

I dunno why they bother trying to bang a story in, quake1 had a six line story in the manual that no one ever read, perfect.

Bring on Quake4.

the perfect John Carmack quote for the occasion:

"Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important."

the Doom3 storyline is hardly taxing:

You are on Mars. All hell breaks loose. Try to survive.

well that just completely removes any artistic integrety he may have had and basically he just peddles violence.

Quake 4 expected in 2005

- It further becomes a single player Game and tells the story of Quake2. Becomes the multi-player share but more dominantly than it it presumably is at Doom3.
- Quake4 is programmed on an improved version of the Doom3 Engine. Vehicles also shall be used and give perhaps destructible architecture (rumor).
- It doesn't become software of ID itself but of Raven develops software (Soldier of Fortune2).

(automatic translation)

ah.. wonderful game this Doom3. I've played it this weekend and wow.. it has such amazing graphics (although you don't see a shit most of the time and have to use your flashlight a lot). I'm happy that finally bump-mapping and the use of different (lighting-)materials in 3D games have become the new standard. The feeling of Doom3 though is not new - we know it from lots of other shooter games. For me it's much like an Alien vs. Predator with a new state of the art Graphic-Engine. Dark places and a constant shortage of ammo. But I didn't expect much more . The sound effects are amazing - after the 3d-engine the best thing about that game.
And it's of course still Doom - sometimes i felt as i had been there before and killed the same monsters, but this time someone turned off all lights and enhanced my visual system (so in principle we get nothing).
I didn't finish the game yet, so perhaps the following might not be true. It seemed to me, that the whole building compex on mars has been built in the same way. Somehow all walls, doors etc. look alike and differ only slightly. I guess with this engine is much more possible than you see in Doom3. LookingGlassStudios should licence it and make System Shock 3 with it :>

It does seem like ID have stolen ideas and settings from Alien Vs Predator, Doom, Quake, Quake 2, Half Life, System Shock 2, among other things.

Oh, and the spiders are blatently from The Thing, even the head is upside down.
