!!!'s Dear Can...

Is really pretty much a tribute to Can. He is saying something along the lines of Ya Know you Want More referencing the Can hit I Want More. It also sounds a bit like the little break part between the verses. Oh Yeah and the handclaps...

are they any good, !!! ?

just their name alone exhausts me and makes me want to never listen to music again.

how many bands can there be all referencing and doing tributes to the same 10 bands?

i havent heard them so its quite possible they are excellent and i am wrong.

i think in 3 months their name will be prounced: everything said three times louder.
but, yeah, i just listened to some mp3's and they sound funny (in a positive way). and whow ... they release on touch and go, i have to say that they aren't a very typical toch and go band. do i smell a image change like at 4AD ... hm?

they're playing live at london's premier night club/ abbatoir fabric, 17th july. so you can go and see schooly d in victoria park for free (respect festival) then be shambolic at fabric later.

i really like them. me and rudy down by the schoolyard, in spite of the punning title, was my favourite record of last year, their back catalogue (see also the Outhud stuff) is a great and their remixes are quite surprising. they seem to really love dance music as oppossed to just being a johnny come lately art-rock band who bought a few Trax records in a Williamsburg car boot sale

fair dos ill give them a listen then, although the talking heads-alike bit doesnt inspire me. i can only just about tolerate the one talking heads (yes, i know it's blasphemy, but sometimes, sometimes they just bore me..)

but if !!! released on touch and go they must be pretty good

the talking heads comparisons aren't that aposite i don't think. i've also heard them compared to the Simple Minds, U2 and the Happy Mondays, so make of that unholy union what you will

i knew someone would say they're not that talking headsy. but they're far more that style than u2 mondays or the other one. i'm not very knowledgable about obscure bands tho. they're more noisy and less david byrney than t heads. but they're funky like t heads. franz ferdinand guitarist looks like he's out of simple minds tho doesn't he now.

mebbe a bit. fact is when muic journalists are fumbling idiotically over their attempts to compose lucid "x sounds like y band on z drugs" statements, chances are that something indefinable and interesting lurks amidst the sum of its parts

hmm possibly animal collective. although even there i've heard tripping daisy, mercury rev (second most overused point of reference to gang of four) and the odious term "folktronica" mentioned

what makes me laugh is now that good old wunderkind Mr Hebden has admitted in interview that he's not really interested in folk at all, a friend just suggested he got some new sample material. his next album could be purely composed out of samples from old skiffle records for all anyone knows. more power to him

there is nowt folky about what kieran's been doing in my book. its just melodic thats all. i really dont see the folktronica thing on that level. id say kevin blechdom with her bluegrass banjo playing and reinterpretation of popular songs is more folk, plus electronics.

definately. fact is now is, as ever in the history of recorded music, from leafcutter john, matmos, and fennesz through to manitoba and animal collective theres a far too wide range of people experimenting in the live- music dichotomy caused by sequencing acoustic sounds as field recordings to use facile terms like "folktronica". folk is explicitly about songs anyway.
