Here's a date for your diary! A newly discovered asteroid could hit Earth on 1 February 2019, say scientists.

But even though the giant rock - 2002 NT7 - is on course with our planet, experts say lots of things could happen in the next 17 years to put it off course. Astronomers are quite worried about it because no other asteroid they've spotted has been on such a direct path to us.

Devastation

It's almost two kilometres wide and would cause lots of damage to the environment across continents if it hit Earth. Experts have worked out it would impact at 28kms a second.

A similar asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs millions of years ago.

2002 NT7 was first spotted hurtling through space by US astronomers on 5 July. Since then, they have been watching it closely.

Experts reckon we have to get used to lots more asteroids like this being discovered. They are usually seen as big threats, but then become less dangerous as their orbits alter or when more accurate measurements are made.

on the cover of the july 19 novoe russkoye slovo, a russian NYC paper, there's a picture of an asteroid heading towards earth but i can't read russian so that's all i can say about it. just thought i'd add a little something more to the hysteria. you're welcome.

we will call ourselves the NT7 Brethren. we will all shave our heads and wear the same adidas track suits and limited edition black on black shelltoes. we shall move to the highlands and set up a commune and through prayer and hallucinogens we will be able to reach the next level and hitch a ride with this asteroid as it hurtles into us and travels on into the deep reaches of space to a far distant planet where we will find eternal bliss.

Bugger extinction, i'm going to live forever! Anyway, shouldn't we be looking at exploring the possibilities of living on other planets, particularly if eventually we will be blasted by a rock. I can't understand why we don't have a permanant space station on the moon by now, it really does seem incredible that more money isn't invested in this.

has'nt anyone seen the bbc-series "space" presented by sam neil? it's a bit cheesey, but interesting anyway. in one part he talks to scientists about moving to other planets and changing their atmospheres. the future was presented in a very positive way, all these people saying that they belived that the humanity only where in it's early stage and so on. in the episode after that one they tried to scare the veiwers with black holes, highly dramatugical...

you know what I loved. was that series that carl sagan had. wasn't it called cosmos, or something? that guy could break down even the most complicated scientific thing into laymans terms. the best thing I ever saw him explain was basically how important human exisitance is in the grand scheme of things. he had this huge calander with all the months on it. with the 1st second of the 1st minute of january 1st being the big bang. and then each month and time frame was where other events occured throughout the history of the universe. when it came time to show when humans came to be we only occupy the last minute of the last hour of the last day of the last month of the year.

I cannot recommend highly enough that people read, or get hold of the BBC video of Jacob Bronowski's "The Ascent Of Man". Again very simply described in laymans terms, it is the story of how human rationality and creativity have worked together to drag us out of the mud. It explains how artistic and scientific developments have always fed back off each other (e.g. the introduction of perspective in art in the Rennaissance allowing engineers to better imagine 3-dimensional objects moving in space and time, and thus to understand the concept of process that much more clearly), and most importantly reminds us that - fucked up though we still may be - we've come a fuck of a long way.

Nasa was wrong! They corrected it and the asteroid isn’t on a collision course anymore.
But the next asteroid will threaten us soon…

I think the chance of that asteroid actually colliding with earth was one in a 100000.
So i'm not gonna give it that much more thought for when i finish my doomsdaydevice it wont mather anyway
