If this is true, and file-sharing is responsible, one could conclude that "on-line piracy" has been the single greatest factor in increasing profits, because it forces record companies to keep a tighter lid on mass-production and costs.

fascinating article, however, i'm still none the wiser as to why mp3 filesharing is BAD. the quality is appalling, however, thru mp3 filesharing i've been led to buy music from artists i would not normally have access to.

mp3 file sharing has stifled my creativity. I've spent so much money on buying music as a result of downloading stuff, I can't afford to upgrade my studio.

That's a very interesting article, not least due to having input from the R.I.A.A.'s top man. I've not had much concern over file sharing's effects on major record companies though, except for their influence on legislators. I'm more interested in finding out it's effects, positive or negative, on underground music. Harder to measure conclusively, I would have thought.

this article also illustrates how major labels can cook the record charts, as charts are done using record sale orders, not final sales. so a record can get into number 1 on the album charts pretty easy, all the label has to do it offer the stores a bulk order discount and allow them to return mountains of unsold records. for some reason the charts count orders but not returns.

hmm. yes, that's an important issue. i wouldn't know where to begin to find out information about the effect mp3 filesharing has on underground music.
