How do you listen to music?
Serious question.
How often, if ever, do you sit down and dedicatedly listen to music, without a magazine, TV-with-the-sound-down, internet or anything else to distract you? What are your usual environments to listen to music, either dedicatedly or ambiently? |

Well obviously in a club you can listen with your guts too if it's a good enough system.

I have music on all the time, unless I'm watching a film or tv, which requires my ears. But otherwise, music is always on, sometimes I will just sit and listen, sometimes, such as now, I will listen to music and do other things at the same time.

interesting thread, vknid
i tend to do anything quite concentrated and not to consume music as an background-filler for other activities. so their must coincide quite a few circumstances to make me find the time to just sit down and listen to music (and then not to sleep away). regarding the fact that good music requires some repeated listening, i could reduce my collection to few items to concentrate on during the years to come, if there wasnt this archive function and those inspirations that make me jump up and search for the only music that could be it in that very moment. an interesting extension to this thread´s question could be "how much listen musicians to their own music (released or not, older or newer)? to answer my own question, i hardly ever listen to my own music. less after it´s released. and i almost never play out my own records at clubs (which says a lot about how much (=little) i regard my music as representation of my musical vision. i think sometimes that the way of listening to music has a lot to do with the way of making music. still am not sure though if and how. |

i usualy listen to music the way most of you do. but what i like the most is when i buy a new record that i listen to while doing things around, and that tune is so f***ing good that i stop everything, just to sit down in the front of my hifi. and then i go deep into it...

yeah, it´s true. sometimes i just fall asleep when producing with my laptop, sitting on my bed. usually when i edit some very chilled loop. in the morning i wake up, with the headphones still on and the loop running. it must have some effect on my dreams.

i got music running pretty much all the time. i mostly listen to it and concentrate on whats going on, but it differs a lot depending what music is running. theres stuff i can put on again and again and allways find something fresh about it (those are the best, yet not allways easy to conquer).
but theres music i cant stand concentrating on but really like running in the background. its more of a distraction thing though, this must be the way my parents listen to music. as for doing things that need concentration (like learning for exams) while listening to music, i discovered that i can do them much better when i got something very minimal, monotone running in the back (like Maurizio for example). it helps me concentrating but it doesnt let me focus on the music, it rather prevents me from distracting myself to much. |

I don't have a TV - I listen to music now, where I used to watch TV...
I listen to music in Casa Paco , my local grotty bar... In fact checking my productions on the speakers in the bar , when there's people there , is how I gauge whether a mix is finished or not.. |

the best thing listening to music is while having a nice glass of wine.
unfortunateley I cannot turn the music very loud in my room so that I have to listen via headphones. It´s also very nice, but not as nice as via a good speaker system. |

some music works better over headphones, stuff you really have to concentrate on, avoid distractions.
whenever a new Radiohead album comes out, I avoid playing it in the car on the way back from the record shop, and stick it in my stereo with my nice earphones on (which I snapped 2 nights ago - argh!), because for the first experience I want to really lose myself in the music, emmerse my mind with just that and nothing else, and you can only do that with headphones. As for rocking out, blasting level works best with big speakers, you should be able to feel the floor rumble. ![]() ........................... listening and appreciating music is a very serious task, so i'm really concentrated when i do so... i prefer to have my arms crossed (it suggests seriousness..) and not stare at anything in particular, so that no distractions are caused (when the piece is really interesting i may even choose to close my eyes...). shame i haven't got a beard, because i would stroke it too...
as for the place, i haven't got particular preferences, but the sound has to come out in stereo, or i get cross.... |
