MDK came over last week to Barcelona , and played a fantastic set of death metal double bassdrums, motown, rod stewart and some brutal ragga sounds.

although the whole set was mixed up just the way i like it , the ragga sound cut through the shit system at the Astin bar better than everything else , even Maggie May.

it turns out the cutting ragga sound was this record - Pressure by The Bug on Rephlex. Man , this shit is SO ruff! the beats and basses and crunchin mids are wild analogue and distorted , sounds like 909s and EMS in there - there's a sprinklin of nuschool fx on some of the MCing ( the rootsman , wayne lonesone , daddy freddy , tikiman ) , but on the whole its the music that bites hard enough to back up the tuffness of the modern dancehall MC rhythms.

of course , the man behind the instrumentals is Kevin Martin - we all know of him here at erutufon as being the man behind experimental and hard hitting hip-hop outfit Techno Animal.

the album is not a 'nice' album by any means , most of the tracks are aggressive and vigourous, but its totally unique nonetheless and will certainly force things along with its powerful energy.

One of my favourite recent albums, that; bloody big, so it is. Not quite so hot on the slow/moody/poetry tracks, but the full-on dancehall assault is menkle.

Amen to that.

Would it be controversial to say that The Bug's waltzed in and done ragga better than ragga does it? Of course, and I probably say that due to my own limited knowledge more than anything. Best thing Rephlex have put out in yonks. The ragga tunes we hear round here in Brixton seem to keep to the same raw production elements (it's presets-a-go-go with a lot of that stuff) so it's great that he's kept it like that rather than wowing everyone with overproduction, which I guess he could have so easily done.

Has any of you checked out Sprengstoff Records? There is some really intense raggacore stuff going down on that label, sadly all releases are pretty limited...

Where is Spregstoff from , Wheezer?

The most interesting thing to hear would be some bases as ruff as these European raggacore productions comin out of Jamaica - its not expensive production values , a reliable drum machine , some outboard and tape machines / dub cuts would do it .. Less equipment than Studio 1 had when they started...

I have actually heard some pretty brutal Jamaican productions, including some that had cutup metal guitars in (I think this was on a Red Rat track, but obviously the backing track is probably used by all the vocallists if it was a popular one). Kieren Hebden usually plays one or two proper mental dancehall 'riddims' in his DJ sets. Must look into this further.
