we were talking about this at the weekend....I'm recently introduced to COIL, and very impressed with what i've missed. It'd be great to get a chalet share together for this with some of u lovely no-future members. i'm definitely interested. It' over the weekend of 14/15/16 May, and u don't have to leave RETG until the Monday am for this one so it really is 3 evenings of music and visuals.

Same place as where they held ATP this year... Having definately left a part of myself their back in April, I am wondering, IF I go too this, just how much me will make it back! It's a HEEEAVY line-up though... This really is a one-off opportunity to see TG play - I s'pose it'd be rude not to! Would love to see Coil play a LOUD set too - They were amazingly good @ ATP but I did feel a little dissapointed that they didn't blow my socks off! It's a real shame, they never managed to secure a performance from Swans too... They would have fit right in with all the sonic mayhem. |

No, defintely steer clear when feelin' 'fragile', hehehe.... (Then again same could be said for most of the TG-fest line-up.)
You ever see them play Emma? Seen them a few times @ The Astoria(although unfortunately not in their earlier days - I was about 6!!! ) and the first (and most intense) was hilarious if nothing more than for the pretrified looks of blatantly tripping people hastily leaving the corwd in order to get their head togther... (Including a mate of mine, who I'd always considered to be pretty 'thick skinned' when it came to that sort of thing.)10mins in to the set he was off like a shot... All he could desribe was a "Huge dark wave".... COOOOL!!! |

Typically, as Michael Gira got older, the music mellowed somewhat(although the lyrics certainly didn't!!!)... and to look back there is a a nice level of diversity accross their recorded history...
I own predominantly later, accoustic based(In the BROADEST sense) stuff, but am eager to once again get recordings of the wickedly harsh Industrial era stuff like 'Greed' & 'Filth'... Love Of Life was always a bit of a favourite(although once again somewhat less intense), of which they even released some 'floor friendly' versions as singles... Real trance inducing stuff, but I don't think they'd go down too well on the dancefloor circa 2003! I recommend the book Gira released in the mid nineties - The Consumer - I don't know if I still have my copy, but it arguably makes the music seem like childsplay! http://www.younggodrecords.com/ |

Yes - true, the thing is a mate of mine saw them in london, and it was a pretty bad side of the coin by all accounts - with them doing some "ritualistic" stuff, and he describes the musick as being very "general midi" - so I think at ATP we got a good deal
even if John Balance was well fucked up ! ![]() |

well, when saw the swans on their farewell tour, the music was definitely not "mellowed" - in fact i left the venue for it was just guitar noise chaos, nothing else. i loved the records but the live experience was totally disappointing. they had pan sonic as support act though which was cool.

definitely indending to do RE: TG next May. ATP was a life changing experience for me but I think it was entirely down to Autechre's line up and programming. Next year there's 2 ATPs, one in March (brrrrrr) and one in April. 6 days, each day with a different curator. Sounds good but rather fractured so I think I'll blow out and do the TG thing in what should hopefully be a nice sunny May weekend, getting down and dirty.
Thought Coil were wicked at ATP, I'm more into their droning stuff myself ("Time Machines"...mmmmmm) and like Hazell was incapable by that time on the Sunday of doing anything other than lying on my back on the carpeted area to the side of the stage and absorbing the vibe. I have an acceptable quality recording of their set on mp3 at home. Love the bit where he's going on about having a tranquilised horse in his chalet!! |

i have a thing for COIL's 'Love's Secret Domain' Album. They're quite new to me (decadnids turned me on to them) and so far, this is my fave by far, and I'd like to hear more.

I think I do actually, I would have to hunt it out though, I think I have got all of them now.
If you like COIL you must try Eraldo Bernocchi and Bill Laswell stuff, they have also done stuff with Mick Harris, if you love that dark kinda thing. I love it! |
