Dance music in decline

as reported in The Guardian

http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/news/...026308,00.html

its true though ... but then again , the whole music biz is in decline... I think people are finally coming down off E's and realising that 75% of the so called dance music they were listening to is indeed shite ... Could be a pruning process?

thank fuck... about time the shears came out, hope i dont get pruned in the process... haha

i think clubs and magazines have been a bit too reliant on the old guard who were last essential 6 or 7 years ago.

I read that artical earlier, and I agree that the people who are really into the music, will stay really into the music... I think it's only really a problem for the more corporate element... Granted, we've all felt the pinch, but I feel this has had more to do with a general recession around the world.... It does seem to be that Bands are the thing these days, and I've also thought that there are simelarities between now and the early to mid 70s in the way that there seems to be a real lack of passion about music... Maybe it's just the music I'm into which seems to be like this, and if I was into Nu Metal and 17 again it would seem totally different....

I say everything listed in that article is a good thing. To be honest, I only got into electronic music in the past 2 or 3 years. The main thing that turned me off was the mainstream, the blips and beeps, the superstar djs and the crap music.

Since I discovered the more 'underground' aspect of it, it opened my eyes to how great some of this music is, and now I'm a total convert.

But the same happens with every form of music. Take britpop, about 3 good 'britpop' bands, plus 400 thousand mediocre ones. It's the bland artists that die out, the great ones with more than just a big record deal to back them up are the ones that survive.

Viva la good dance music!

Good fuck em, I hate that so-called super star dj thing anyway, djing is too easy to earn that much money. if people don’t want to pay £20 to get into a club and then £5 for a drink i don’t blame them.

This kind of thing should be good for the underground scene,
as long as bastard quick buck promoters don’t come in and try to take over, there should be an influx of new punters in the techno scene.

yup culling is a natural process, like a lion catching and munching on a fat old wilderbeast in the savannah

bring it on i say, i have never been a fan of big clubs anyway, far too impersonal, as for the music, of late i have felt that there is more amazing stuff than ever out there so i don't think that that is the problem, its just swamped in so so shite.

once we are shot of the shit "the kids" may again see a much more appealing underground scene and be drawn into it again. i mean if i was 15 today would i be impressed with pete tong and the likes?

You only have to look what happened to Northern Soul to see what's going to happen next, same mistakes IMHO.

i have said it before and ill say it agian. the techno/dance business have been on a boom for the last years and people have been saturated with our shit and have now lost interest. after the storm comes the calm and the people who really love/dig their shit will stay and the others will go over to next hype. but a boom never comes once, so we will be back!

it all now depends on ourselves on how we sell ourselves and our parties! if you just do the same thing as always, people will find no interest, but if we keep on surprising and delivering quality, we will hang in there...

Well, dance music has been on the decline for a number of years now, and its hardly surprising - this article which is linked at the bottom of the one posted is also an interesting read...

You couldn't explain to those of us who aren't old enough to remember the Northern Soul scene what happened?

The ironic thing is the writer of that artical used to be the editor of Mixmag, who championed all the commecial shite at the time....

Dance culture has killed itself by taking itself too seriously.

If this really is the end of the superstar DJ era, then AMEN. That brand of dance culture and DJ worship has always made me sick.

on that note, I demand the return of the disposable trashy dance pop anthem to mainstream radio.

Ahem Ahem
I is now time for me to arrive.
If I might draw a comparrison to the Global Coffee Industry.
First there were only a few underground cafe's that were in search of that ray of light in a cup. The Espresso was produced by a person that drew from the sole, this was a product had been nertured and loved all the way for your personal sensory delight for you to consume.
These were the true "Artisians" of there trade.

Does this ring true to any Espresso fueled producers out there??

Fuck it, it was all rubbinsh anyway. Music isn't good for anything except car commercials. I only listen to the sound of someone dragging a nail along a brick. And dance to architechture.

Well, who gives a shit about super star DJ's and mega clubs anyway...The question that I find much more worrying is whether the so-called underground really has an influx of really young people. And I don't see that happening. Also, although there are definitely very good records coming out, nobody seems to play them...So it's the underground itself which is not in a good condition.

yes, theres no more a connection between the the both. the young never get in touch with new good music. you need to search and to learn there to search. to find it takes time. too much time

the dance community here is definately going down the drain.
two specialty dj shops have gone out of business, one venue that had played host to shows by Rhythm and Sound, the Rephlex tour and the Schematic tour has gone under.
all of this stems from the sagging economy and i think, to some extent, the anti-rave bill may have had an impact.
getting people to come hear techno is nearly impossible unless there is an extreme amount of hype (i.e. Fisherspooner) around the performer.
though, things have gotten so bad here that even if you had fuckin' Paul Oakenfold playing you'd have a hard time filling the venue.
no one has any money.

When people say dance music is dead............

Do they mean "Dance" music or "dance" music ?

Indeed the corporate end is start to decline which can only be a good thing but i can't really see people not wanting to go out and dance as a form of amusemment and entertainement.....kind of an age old tradition isn't it ?

As far new / young people getting into the scene.....plenty of them where I live .... s'all about how you reach out to peeps really from where I'm sat.

Cris is right, there's a whole load of stuff I bought over the years that I listen to now and think "fucking hell, what drugs WAS I taking?". Endless stuff sounds utterly, utterly boring now. Obviously that's partly a symptom of being any kind of record collector - your tastes shift and (d)evolve over time. Even so, the glut in dance music caused by the 'anyone can do it' mentality - and the easy money brought in by the near-constant expansion of the global scene from 1990-2000 - has meant that the really special stuff is just swamped by all the crap. I say it's kill or cure time. That which does not destroy us etc... and other platitudes. Of course that's easy for me to say from the sidelines, and it's much more complicated and painful for those who try and make a living through music production and party promotion.

Strangely, K-Dub's music is one sort I can't see wearing thin, which is nicely paradoxical as it's quickly made and jokey and trashy in its references... whereas so much dance music of the 90s was made with bullshit pseudo-spiritual ideas of "timelessness" and "searching for that perfect beat" and whatnot, yet became incredibly dated incredibly quickly. Praps producers just need to remember that it ain't nuttin but a party? An insane hyper-wired hall-of-mirrors party in the midst of the end-times, maybe, but still a party.

crikey, emef, it's highly unlikely you;d be pruned as your creations form the basis for many a dj set...you could be the dj's dj?#

okay- personal fears aside - so much music that is meaningful is of the moment, and doesn't bear up against comparisons made out of time and space.

i drank too much red wine earlier, so probably not capable of making a coherent post
