Alesis MMT-8
Does anyone know what these are like to use, I'm going to buy some more equipment to do live sets again and wondered if anyone had any first hand experience with these.
I know they are cheap but are they any good? |

they are awesome but you need to get a data filer. their memeory is small and can fill up quick. they can't handle very intense midi messages though.. as soon as you record a mod-wheel move, you can start to hear the sequence jump at the loop point and sometimes even slow down. it also has 96ppq clock resolution, so if you're trying to do say 15 drum hits at once, you may get a little 'flam' effect because it has to space those midi messages out really quick (it can't play them all exactly at once). if you're just using it for basic notes or drums, it rocks. i had one, sold one, got other sequencers, and now i miss it and plan on buying one tonight actually
. they're intuitive as hell, and a super-useful tool for playing live. what i really liked about it is that it never once got in the way of creativity or my flow of thought... |

i just got the mam sq-16. it's a step sequencer, 606 style + 3 note tracks (notes are programmed kind of like a fr-777). it rocks! a bit tough to figure out at first but you pick it up quick. it has this awesome 'rotation' function that allows you to progam wierd jumps. exaple: make it pla7 3 steps, then jump 4 steps, then play three, etc.. my two gripes: no shuffle, and you can't program multiple patterns while playing (like you can on a 606). you can only edit the pattern that's selected and not a chain of patterns all at once. there's the asq-10 which is just the sequencer part of the mpc which is nice and tight but has no individual track mutes. the kawai q80 is pretty good too. you can set different lengths for each track in a pattern which lets you make goofy rolly-polly sequences.

the mc-50's really got in the way for me. everything is too burried in menu's. it's good for writing a song, but not for writing a track (imo)

Also the Latronic Notron, If you ever get the chance to buy one of these, DO IT. One of the best pieces of kit I've ever used.

hey JE:5 go find a black one (mmt-8)...it has the latest software revision...but it´s hard to find...i also work with a mmt-8 it´s much fun...especially the softbuttons for muting tracks...i do some recordings in cubase and put them in this little machine...better than record the tracks with it...´cause what i miss is the record-loop or overdub funktion...but with sysex dump or midi-rec from cubase it works well...and so u don´t need a filter anymore

i know the bloke who made the notron, gerard, - well, i have a friend who knows him v.well - if you want one i could always see if he can get hold of them to sell...
i'm using an MC-50 at the moment and agree that it is more of a song-based sequencer, but having had a few battles with it i'm finding it really good fun to use.... it would be excellent to have something that was say, 1/2 MC-50 and 1/2 Notron..... |

the mmt-8 is all ive ever had and its perfect for live stuff.
just keep it basic, nothing too complex. i like the little flip top menu so you have all the directions right there for you. a friend of mine has two (one black, one grey) and is has shit loads of other gear, including sequencers, but still just uses those. anyone know about Doepfer sequencers? |
