get me out of here

i don't know how many of you are from the states, but i envy those of you who are not. i've been shadowing this board for a little while now and have seen countless posts for shows i'd kill to see. maybe i'm just not looking hard enough, but the clubs here (at least in chicago) would never think about booking such people. and rephlex is only just starting to get their braindance shows in the states. how long have they been doing them? some good names come through, though rarely. even our radio sucks. we have one station that plays electronic music on certain nights, but you have to be within a 15 mile radius of downtown chicago to pick it up. why must the us be so obsessed with the guitar? it's really funny how there are lots of good techno producers in chicago, but no one in chicago really cares about them. it pisses me off and almost deters me from trying, but at the same time it makes me try harder to aim attention towards it. sorry if these seems to much of a bitch session to some of you. i just wanted to unleash my jealousy upon you all. anyone need a flat-mate?

if you look in the right spots, there's still some old-school stuff. a few of the old school dj's have been poping up at loft parties and little private affairs, but everything else is being takin over by bad progressive crap. poooooo. besides all that, i'm TIRED of house. you have no clue how much it sucks being a techno lover in a house-head city. i'm going to kill myself now. goodbye.

I think we middle-continental Europeans can be very happy to have such a great and big club culture.
Because of that most American djs are playing here

I do living in Nottingham... But it's kinda cool as well, it means if you put on a night you have the best techno! I suppose the distance thing helps here, you're never more than a coupla hours plane journey from anywhere in Europe....

I got a plan, see.....
...gonna move my ass to Barcelona in 2-3 years. I totally need large amounts of sun - the winters here just kill my drive level.

Step #1 - release records
Step #2 - get Irish passport
Step #3 - get some European gigs
Step #4 - take spanish classes
Step #5 - pack myself into clearly labelled crate

Then find me a chiquita.....

Think it'll work?

@m, you got the right idea. i definately side with you on the sun topic. my room has no windows and i work in a building with no windows, so the only sunlight i see is for the hour drive to and from work. i'm pretty rusty with the spanish though, so barcelona may not work for me. all i know is that each paycheck gets me closer to a plane ride out of here. far away from here.

oh yeah, chiquitas are good too.
and burritos.
definately burritos.

america fucking sucks as far as quality (or any, for that matter) techno shows go. luckily, i moved up to a city where electronic shows seem to be on the rise (Portland, OR). the braindance tour is making a stop here soon and, if things had gone as planned, i'd be seeing Jamie Liddel on friday along with the 606 Dik. But, Mr. Muddlin can't make it, oh well.
I'm sorry that Chicago isn't what it could be (or should be considering how much of an influence that city and its producers have had on house/techno). you should move to sunnier climates for sure.

I plan to get a job in brisvegas once I leave uni....I love the place....granted I haven't been there in about 5 years, but I doubt it's changed that much....the sun and surf rules (we got good beaches here in vic....it's just it's always too bloody cold!)

And why not trying to make the things move by yourself... Find contacts and make your own things... It wouldn't change if no-one makes something

yeah...actually this whole lack of techno (and scenes - which is one of the reasons, tomato, that it is hard to start your own nites, etc) was one of the big influences in me moving to london from new york...

sorry to hear that chicago aint any better than nyc. shame coz i was hoping that it was since i like a lot of the music coming out of there

Hey Namshub - have you ever seen 2 books called "He died with a falafel in his hand" and "The Tasmanian babes fiasco", both about the horrors of house-sharing in Oz, mostly in Brisbane? I've never been down that way, but they seem to give a really good flavour of the heat and the weed and the madness.

Karitek - I hear what your saying about NYC...we played a gig there last May and were OVERWHELMED with the amount of crap-ass house music NYC is into (don't mean to offend anyones tastes, but i draw the line at gay disco house!). It's a house & hip-hop city almost completely! The techno scene is way smaller than we expected for such a huge city - a number of big players there internationally, but a pretty small scene in comparison. I wished we could've made it out for a bit of that 'electro-clash' scene that the media tells me is growing in your neck of the woods, but things didn't get figured out until too late in our trip. The record shopping in NYC is fantastic though...oodles of great stuff and the people that work in the stores seemed to know their shit inside and out (refreshing!).

I've never been to Barcelona, but it's developed this mystical appeal to me from what others have said that have visited there...and it's proximity to the rest of Europe ain't too bad (relative to Toronto, anyway!). It's a few years off still, but I'll be damned if I'm not gonna make it happen...gotta have goals, right?

i like black gay disco from back in the day.

everyone always thinks where they live is worse than somewhere else.

brighton is lovely though - there is interesting music here, but not as much as you'd think...

barcelona is lovely - but the pace of life / bureaucracy / bad infrastructure seems to be difficult to cope with at times...still the sunshine and it being incredibly cheap to live makes up for it

id happily live in berlin too

just to add to the list of places beginning with B that are nice to live in - apparently Bristol is very cool too!

i just recommended that book to emef this past weekend - classic housing horror stories!! my aussie mate gave it to me when i went to visit her this summer. a movie was about to come out over there of it back in july...never saw anything bout it here tho.

yeah new york has a ridiculously tiny techno 'scene' (if u could ever call it that), especially since quite a bit of techno is made there. and most of the few nites that are there don't play the techno i'm into. **shrug**

also i think we have lots of cool clubs here in germany with very often great line-ups.

werd, the film of "he died wif a felafel" , is a shokker... the book is a total classik and is a accurate protrait of share-house hell in brisbane. the oz techno scene is mainly in melbourne(which is pretty big), sydney is very housey and bris is just total cheez.... tho we do have a pretty healthy noize scene here :o) bris is also stoopidly cheap!! MUI - bris has'nt changed much except they've ripped down all the old cool buildings and replaced them wif apricot prefab future ghettos...

Is it possible the American government suppresses the electronic music?
I heard something like that on TV.

They “cleaned“ the big record stores from “Techno-records”, because “Techno causes drug consumption”.

recently the governmnet has been cracking down on loads of electronic music things. they are trying to ban glow sticks (claiming they are drug paraphernalia) and last year they arrested 2 people (in alabama i think) for throwing a completely legal party, claiming that they were running a house of drugs.

i think, tho, that it is less goverment supression and more general people's lack of open mindedness bout music that leads to the lack of electronic music there.
