"yo am"/"yow" is common enough.. but negative was always shit like

"I ay" (I'm not)
"I day" (I didn't)
"yo ay" (you aren't)
"it ay" (it's not)

Or at least it was when i lived in wolves, which was admittedly nearly 20 year agow now. I reckon your mate is a wrongun.
