Dave Smith Mopho(?)

Anyone have any experience with these? Trying to decide between the or dish out a bit more money and get the evolver. What is the Mopho's strengths? Weaknesses?

From what I can gather, it's basically an updated Sequential Pro-1 with memories and midi packed into a pocket sized box- I think for the money it's pretty good, I'd buy one myself if I had the cash spare- so if you want a Pro 1 like monosynth you can fit in your pocket for under 400 quid....

not had a mopho, but i've had a prophet08, mono evolver desktop, and a poly evolver keyboard, and would say the little mono evolver was my favorite. Although it sounds different, you can to a certain degree cover the same bases with the evolver, and you get the extra benefit of of a high pass filter and a couple of digital oscillators. Also, I may be wrong, but i think the sequencer on the prophet/mopho needs to be gate triggered from the keyboard (like an appegiator), where as the evo sequencer can run on its own.

One thing that struck me the most about the Prophet 08 when I got to see one in the flesh, was the absolutely appalling build quality.

Is all DSI kit similarly made?

P08: you can run the sequence on it's own without a gate trigger, although it's not something I do much.

My P08 has dodgy encoders and a power jack that needs wiggling to keep it on, I really like the sound but the build is definitely wanting. I've heard it got a lot better after the first run.. remind me not to buy a first run synth again...

DSI sent me some pot cleaner stuff which they have said has solved some peoples problems, but have kind of suggested they would replace the pots if that didn't work.. we'll see.

Evolvers got a great sequencer on it.. Loads of different distortion too

The shift button crapped out on mine after a few years use

Mopho is more true analogue but only 2 osc per voice (+2 sub octave generators), Evolver has 4 Osc per voice, but 2 of which are digital similar to the prophet VS.

Evolver has a more complex sequencer than the simple step sequencer on the Mopho..

Mopho has one filter, Evolver has two- both use Curtis chips (Like the old sequentials)

Mopho is 110 quid cheaper than the Evolver...

I don't think the evolver is necessarily better, just different.

If you want a classic analogue synth sound, go with the mopho. They are fairly straightforward to use and have a nice pure clean sound (compared to the evolver)

If you want more complex sequenced sounds with a bit of dirt/distortion/feedback/digital aliasing, go with the evolver.

Evolver work well as standalone effects units too.

Well to give credit to DSI the pots kinda feel like new again... just have to wait and see if it lasts.

Cat got your tongue Emef?
I think it's best to have exactly the same set up as Emef because then you will sound as good as him- but probably like him in a wheel chair

I have a Morpho, I also believe I am the 'friend' JE:5 mentioned.

I would suggest this to anyone who wants a good piece of kit for a fairly good price.

It also has a cool(ish) piece of software that allows you to program the (albeit 1 bar) sequencer. Some of the sounds you can get out of it are fat and warm and as Mark said it is a 2 Osc prophet. So it's good to a point buuuuut if your a VSTi fan I would say don't bother.

If however you fancy going off into the corner of the room with a pair of headphones on you can make some really nice sounds.

this is the video that made me buy it, now I just need the machine drum to go with it
