you all need to swich on the loudness button on your tape deck. that's a magic button made by the same people who invented bossanova, varishuffle and acidcordions (tba).

There's definitely something quite ravey about Roska's stuff. The second one is a bit "Energy Flash" in places I reckon.

Maybe 'Urban' is to hiphop as 'funky' is to grime/step/techno/house ?

There's some really nice stuff like this which sounds like the stuff Steve mentioned - almost like Rob hood or Surgeon doing soca.
That's about all the stuff I got time for with this, the synthed up 80's vibe mixed with carnival drums that wouldn't sound too far outta place on a fatboy slim rekkid ain't doing it for me so much, neither is a lot of the stuff westwood is hyping to fuck (he's been on a massive uk funky tip for a while now) Quite liked some of the floating point stuff, but it's too shiney to give it 'street' appeal for me, I'd prefer to check some of the more underground stuff, which is probably more of what code-9 etc are playing I imagine (Or I'd hope). Stuff I've been finding interesting on this tip (but probly doesn't conform to the 'genre' thank fuck). Addison Groove Jack Sparrow (bit cheesey in places) f (night drive is beasting.) A lot of the newer hotflush gear also touching on this sound in a more stylish way (IMO). TVO also seems to have a good grip on the sound without calling it UK funky. |

That's a pretty solid tracklist there, Chrissy Mbot is a great DJ. If you can't find something you like in that mix then Funky isn't for you I guess.

I think the soca thing is a misleading though - it was a comparison people made that stuck, but it's not really right. It's dancehall, broken beat, garage and grime that the rhythm patterns come from essentially, namechecking Soca and Afrobeat was just bloggers trying to out-cosmopolitan one another.
