Check out some recent Kode9 DJ sets if you can find them.

When I saw him last month it was a really sweet mix of Funky, heavy synthy Soca and Dubstep.. but all of it really tinged with a Detroit feel. Really good. In fact the new hyperdub sounds more like straight Detroit, not really like what he was playing out.

See I really have no time for that stuff Knid posted...

It's a bit like the UK Garage effect I think... it sounded great on fuzzy pirate radio stations, but never found out which those particularly great tracks ever were. I don't seem to be able to find anything that sounds like what Kode9 was playing, maybe it's just the old 'distorted rig' thing... The thing I was hearing sometimes sounded closer to Robert Hood with the Ragga Twins doing Soca... whereas those two vids sound like lame General Midi..

I think you should try finding an MP3 of that track and listening to it clearer than on YouTube quality - I think the rhythm programming AND a lot of the sounds beneath the surface are amazing.

But sorry I did kinda divert from the sort of stuff you're talking about by posting 2 vocal tunes. Try this as a better example of the sort of stuff DVA and Ill Blu do that's closer to what you're after, maybe? http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/sc...o?Track=FF001B

A lot of the stuff that Kode plays nowadays is actually Hyperdub artists, so he will be playing a whole lot of unreleased tracks by DVA, Cooly G, Ikonika (who, although her album is quite half-steppy, has gone very Funky in her productions & remixes since) and Kyle Hall (who IS from Detroit but is strongly UK influenced I think).

A lot of UK Funky DJs are playing a lot of Karizma these days too apparently.

I think maybe the biggest part of what I'm saying is that Kode9 is a good DJ, maybe what I was hearing was his skills as much as anything.

So you mean if someone plays the records in the right context you are able to suspend your preconceptions?

maybe more the fact that what I was hearing weren't single records

I've heard the Geiom stuff out and there's just something about the production which I find kinda lightweight. YMMV

Well yes, I certainly recognise the experience of hearing a load of tracks and finally starting to realise that what you think of as unsophistication in the synth timbres is actually a different way of playing with tonality...

DVA, Ill Blu and Roska is perhaps closer to what it was I was hearing.. but again out of context they just sound quite normal and anodyne.

Bit like hearing a Jah Shaka record out of context, not that great.

Oh and it's nothing to do with sophistication I don't think... I'd happily hear the 'Energy Flash' of Funky

Something that sounds chunky at home not just in the club... none of those brittle GM drums.

Okey dokey. UK Funky: not house music. Got it.

Can we at least agree that it's the crappest name for a "genre" ever?

definitely. When I first heard the name, I wanted to find the person who coined it and punch them in the cock

It's up there with Drum & Bass.

Really though, I quite like the fact it's a bit of a 'fuck you Grandad' genre name.

R'n'B is a proper "fuck you Grandad" name, too

"Hey, remember Rhythm and Blues? This is NOTHING like that."

cheers, everyone. still not really feeling it, though, apart from the deadboy (the untold and the geiom weren't bad, mind). not really as gritty as i imagined it
