Oneohtrix Point Never’s whopping Rifts collection was one 2009’s most celebrated underground releases, lapped up by fans of noise and post/pre-techno synthesizer music with equal vigour.
Rifts, released on Carlos Giffoni’s New York label No Fun Productions, compied tracks from various limited edition OPN releases, including the superb Russian Mind LP and Transmat Memories cassette. Oneohtrix Point Never is the alter ego of Daniel Lopatin, a Brooklyn-based musician primarily associated with the noise/drone scene, but his terrifically gleaming, well-realised synth instrumentals are comparable with those of Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream and Vangelis. If you dig any of those chaps, or if you were a fan of Delia & Gavin’s wonderfully curdled DFA album Days of Mars, then you should already be all over OPN.
Oneohtrix Point Never will perform live in London on Thursday 18 March at The Grosvenor in Stockwell. Also on the bill is Carlos Giffoni, who’ll be presenting No Fun Acid – a project which finds him wrestling the otherworldly sounds of the 909, 303 and 808 out of their familiar rave context and into the realm of noise.
