9 might be pretty good. think tim burton co-produced it. not that that actually means very much, mind, but there you go

i believe cloudy with a chance of meatballs is supposed to be alright too

and while we're about it, how come up is the only pixar film that's been mentioned in this thread? they're all fucking wicked

edit: except it isn't. i posted before i looked at page 2

cars isn't one of their best, but even that's head and shoulders above almost all other kids' films. i honestly haven't seen one that i didn't love

i've always disliked pixar for some reason. i don't really know why tbh. i convince myself that it's because their films lack charm or their humour is too woody allen, but it's probably because they symbolize a step away from the films i loved as a kid.

i think i'm just stuck in the past. a few i've seen recently are definitely changing my opinion though.

I thought the incredibles and wall-e were excellent.
Toy Story and Monsters Inc were far too twee.
Cars looked arse.

I've seen half of Ratatouille and it was great, Randy Thom on Sound Design duties.

i don't see them as any different from the films we watched as kids. they appeal to kids and adults in the same way as any decent kids' films do. how are they a step away?

like i said i think i'm just stuck in the past. i loved animatronics and hand drawn cartoons, but cgi has basically replaced those completely.

i'm learning though! liked most of the ones mentioned in this thread.

you sound older than i am, not younger! cgi is just another way of doing things. it's not intrinsically shit. most films are shit, so most cgi films are shit.

I thought Wall-E had a really nice hand animated style... it IS hand animated essentially, just different tools. A lovely hands on approach to the sound too. Disney/Pixar stuff is properly rooted in the old skills, they lost the plot for a while but are back on it I think.

this is great - check out all the funky old disney sound effect contraptions
