films for kids

my little brother and sister (9 and 7 years old) stay with me most weekends and love a good film, but since i really don't follow mainstream films these days i find it hard to know what to get for them, so would like some ideas.

as for ones i would recommend, well basically all of the studio ghibli films. we all watched "up!" recently too and i thought it was brilliant, even though i generally hate the cgi shite these days. they've seen most of my 80's favourites too, time bandits, willow, the goonies etc.

so, any ideas?

naaah i am all for films that adults and kids can enjoy, that's why i think the studio ghibli films are so good. problem is i just don't follow films that much atm, and most of the films i watch just are not for kids.

yeah i was looking forward to watching coraline with them but the little bastards had seen it already. : (

fantastic mr.fox might be worth a try at some point. quite like the eastern european style animation, nice change from the horrible cleancut cgi shit.

i'd like to see Ponyo, the new Ghibli.. there was one showing at a festival here but I missed it. It was on in Japan when I was there at easter.. obviously no subtitles tho so didn't bother.

i've asked them before what they think about trying a subtitled film, because a load of the old ghibli films i have are only in japanese. they seemed to be fine with it, but i think in practice it'd be a bit much for my wee sister.

will definitely check that one out though, cheers. (:

i'm pretty sure there are dubbed versions.

I find em too much dubbed or subtitled though, never quite know what the fuck is actually going on

As far as I can remember, there's nothing in 'King of Kong' that's in any way Adult?

And it's hiliarious, Billy 'King of BBQ Sauce' Mitchell is the best bad guy ever. Everyone can get behind routing for him to lose.

er that last post was aimed at love_tempo btw. miss edit. : (

@hectic - just got that one for them tonight actually. i saw it a while back, it's quite childish, even moreso than spirited away etc. still has the ghibli charm though so still excellent.

you have no idea how proud i was of my little sister when she told me pom poko was her favourite film. my little bro loves nausicaa too, probably my favourite. ahh i love the little bastards.

The High School Musical series is all i'm letting Luca watch at the moment.

He likes the old Moomins felt animations as well - although 7 and 9 is probs too old for that..

I though 'Up' was quite odd. The first 15 mins seemed way over a five yr olds head - and the dogs freaked him out.

Wall-E?

I'm a shit Dad eh?

Wall-e was really great!

Spike Jonze film adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are at least looks good.

Yeah I liked Wall-E, we watched it at the weekend and it takes repeated watchings well.. which matters with 5 year olds. The same episode of Henry's Cat x20 in one morning can get a little wearing.

no shit! we watched that one last time they visited. they were all being made roughly the same time i was a kid too, wish i'd known about them.

they make me feel how i did when i watched films as a kid.

problem is, they've seen all the ghibli films a million times (apart from grave of the fireflies hah) and now i realize i barely know any other films that are suitable for kids. can hardly sit down and watch akira kurosawa films with them. : (

yeah up was pretty strange, but i just found it had more charm than most of the other cgi films. definitely took inspiration from french cinema.

i really wanted to see wall-e after reading posts about it on here, but they've seen that already ...maybe i could get them to watch it again.

my little bro has been going on about a film called "9" too. sure i saw a short film years back that used similar characters. will keep an eye on that one.

yeah the repeated watching thing drives me fucking mental. ice age every, fucking, day. they went through a scoobie doo stage too. ugh.

at least when i was a kid it was star wars, back to the future, willow and the likes that i wanted to watch repeatedly.
