such a shame the shoes didn't hit him. nothing will stick to this awful turd of a man. the way he tries to garner sympathy afterwards is sickening. what a giant, rotten fuckwit.

christ, where are Bush's spin doctors - surely this is a stunning victory for his policy in Iraq - journalist throws shoes at President and he and his family are not arrested and tortured to death... well at least I'm guessing so - he could be in Gitmo by now getting fitted for his orange jump suit and 72 hours in a stress position being forced to listen to Chinese Democracy by GnR.

According to some Muslim comic on the Today Programme this morning, throwing your shoes at someone is one of the highest insults in Islamic society. Bush totally misses the point and just thinks it's "weird," when it's effectively worse than throwing a rotten egg at someone.

During one of the gulf wars I was working for a satellite broadcaster and got to see raw footage. There was a widely aired clip of some men wacking a poster of Saddam Hussein with their shoes (very insulting), but either just before or just after the segment that was aired, one of the guys gets out his knob and starts wacking Saddam's picture with it. This is apparently even more insulting. I wonder if anyone's ever gonna try that on Bushy...

Because it doesn't matter. What is insulting in their culture isn't as insulting in ours. To an American, throwing your shoes at someone is just plain retarded. If someone did that to me I would laugh at them too. I am not trying to defend Bush, but really, SHOES?! What actually pissed me off about the whole thing was his comments after the fact about how that shows democratic progress, that he can do that. But if I did that to him in America I would be in serious trouble. Admittedly I don't know what penalties that man faces. The other thing that bothered me about what Bush said was when he was explaining the democratic freedoms the Iraqi people have was that he (Bush) could hear protesters at a rally, but for his entire presidency he has always hid himself from any anti-sentiment against him, like blocking protesters by buses as he passes through towns.

I know.
But Loz said Bush totally misses the point and just thinks it's "weird," and I was just referring to the fact that what is considered very rude in one culture is not so much in another. I thought the throwing the of the shoes was weird and I knew the cultural aspects of it. It just doesn't have the same impact to an American as say spitting in his face.

That's just stupid. Imagine if someone had run up to Bush and shouted that he was a "motherfucking cocksucking imperialist shitcunt" in Arabic, and then Bush reacted by telling reporters that he thought it was a bit weird that the guy had shouted what sounded like coughing and gibberish at him.

How is that stupid? For arguments sake lets assume Bush knew the cultural implications of what it meant to have shoes thrown at him. What is he supposed to say? That he understands what a horrible insult that is to him, etc? He definitely isn't going to break down sobbing and say how bad of a person he is and how he shouldn't have started the war, etc. Bush likes to deflect and was probably trying to making a joke about the whole situation as he likes to do. And when you boil it all down, someone throwing shoes at you IS weird.

I think that if someone did yell insults at him in a different language it's the same as throwing the shoes...it doesn't really give an impact and I don't think it would have gotten a different reaction...

for an insult to be an insult, the person receiving it has to culturally understand it......it would have been better to just sling some poop at him....that's a fairly universally understood insult...
