I see, well I shall await his mighty judgement then

in the meantime - stand down with your afro's, skintight flares and shiny discoballs , I've re-sheathed my alien mind taker raygun, parked the hover-capri and declare a ceasefire.

damn right..the times we've had, especially round christmas when auntie mabel has a few sherries and starts rambling on about how disco is just for homos and that adam x should be on the royal variety performance.

its a hoot.

Nothing to do with concepts.. its just a clear path in terms of the style of clubs, social networks and structure of music from New York -> Chicago -> Detroit.

Lots of diversions and some exceptions of course but that's the main branch...

Ultimately if I remember rightly though you have a problem with Detroit being so prominent in that techno lineage

Come on one doesn't have to like ANY of the rock and roll scene of the 60s and still be a fan of sepultura.

I don't think the Music Box was exclusively gay and I don't think Ron Hardy gave that much of a fuck about the genres he was playing. He just wanted to put records together in such a way as to make people go absolutely nuts on the dance floor. If you listen to some of Ron Hardy's mixes off DHP you'll hear some serious wonk. Not proto, conceptual or futuristic but just the most absolutely blow your mind stuff that to me still sounds amazingly brilliant. Actually to me this is the best music I've ever heard.
I'm definitely not into techno for futurism although I do find the conceptualism side of it interesting from an wankery arty perspective and that's basically why I was drawn to this forum. For me techno ain't shite if you can't dance to it.
Off the top of my head I can think of three great techno producers who were definitely influenced by Disco; Mills as mentioned before, Kevin Sanderson and Derrick May. I suggest that if you really like the genre you have to at least accept that Disco was fundamental in its progression

I guess if someone likes techno, he should like as well some moroder, boney m, abba, the beatles, elvis presley and obviously almost all polkas.

and anyway

IF YOU LIKE DISCO SO MUCH, WHY DON'T YOU GO TO THE NEAREST DISCOTEQUE AND LIVE THERE?

It's true, that's because I find it an overly simplistic, linear view which does not recognise developments outside of the US because the developments outside of the US mainstream (in terms of electronic music that is) were coming from a more introverted and largely academic point of view (that and the fact that musically speaking , a lot of the music I'm talking about was absolute mince). disco, house, techno were all very good at shaping ideas into something less abstract that had a value to people in terms of being able to dance to it and hence it became the accepted 'authority' to most on what was useful as techno music and what wasn't. America is good at that haven't you noticed ?

So there is no alternative large-scale 'Movement' as it were stemming from that branch of futurism or exploring technology music, but that doesn't mean that other directions didn't exist, weirdly enough, a lot of people who talk a good fight from the other side seem to pretend people like this : http://www.t0.or.at/~konrad/ never existed.

I don't think anyone has said you have to like disco if you like techno. The discussion was more about denying a connection between them. A bit like if you tried to suggest that Sepultura were created in a vacuum and owe nothing to the rock and roll scene that went before them.

Here you go. This is where this discussion started:

Ah, ok, fair enough.
Although I actually am in that camp of not being able to understand how you can like techno and not like any disco anyway.

Would that not be like me saying that I can't understand people who like techno but don't like the film Metropolis ?

I think there's room for people to come to things on their own terms is what I'm getting at

they're both forms of dance music, there are many forms of dance music, most people don't like them all, even in one genre of music most people don't like it all

Didn't at all mean to be derogatory by that. I think conceptualism is cool but firstly techno is music for dancing to. Otherwise you're talking about electronic music or whatever.

I was going to start complaining about how Jeff Mills gets all wanky and conceptual when asked about his music, but the only interview I could find was him saying something like 'I just want to make people dance', so maybe he's not 'like that' any more.

Yeah, agreed.
I didn't think you were being derogatory, but we do fucking rule at the wankery on this forum and nobody can take that form us. So I was just making a joke about it, as a friend amongst friends type thing.
Apart from the friends bit.
They're all cunts really. Especially the ones who don't love the disco.
