Disc Defragmenting

Anyone know any HARDCORE defragging programmes? This is my own fault for not doing regular caretaking of my computer... but my C: drive is completely in tiny bits (mp3s mostly) - XP's own utility seems to do about 1% of the job each time I run it, and I've tried e.g. System Mechanic too, to little avail.

Look!

Windows says more than 15% is ok.... I've got an outboard hard drive though, would transferring the files across, defragging, then bringing them back do me any good?

yes. As far as i know when you copy them over and back again that defrags the drive.

Also remember not to do anything whilst your defragging. Its an overnight job as anytime ive done it restarts when something is written. Might be why its taking so long.

jkdefrag is the best i've used. it's tiny and very fast, not anywhere near as fussy as the built in defragger either - you can usually work away while it runs depending on your disk.

i wouldn't bother joe unless your pc is really thrashing the harddrive when you load something - and even then its more likely to be a registry issue.

backing up all your data is always a good thing... that might inspire you to do a rebuild and then avoiding loading any badly written PC software.

knid, you're better off not running hard disks that close to capacity if you can. They work much better if there's say 25-33% free.

aye

or back everything up to a removable drive, then format your original drive + transfer data back over.

could be quicker.
