sony arseholes
I bought this sony (n38) laptop at the weekend which just came out so there was no info on the web much. Asked the sales guy (naive, I know) if it was a Core Duo 2. He said it was, so I bought it like a gullible thick. Installed all my stuffs, started using it and noticed it wasn't very fast at all. Ran benchmarks, and this thing is only 2/3 the speed of the slower clock speed c2d 1.6ghz. wtf, I thought, looked into it and it turns out it isn't a C2D at all but something called an Intel Pentium dual-core which seems to be the dual-core equivalent of a poxy celeron on codeine.
Grrr....now the shop are disputing with me that they said it was a c2d. The manager is being a complete arsehole. What to do? Cancel the credit card payment and send the thing back by registered mail? Small claims court? Grin and bear it? All this after a pile of hassle getting drivers, installing all my music software, transferring all my data and programs etc... On top of all this the build quality is much shittier than my old sony which makes me want rid. |

why are sony the assholes?
they didn't tell you it was core 2 duo. the sales people did. rule number 1: never listen to sales people. 99% of the time they have no idea what they are talking about. ever. I'd take that thing back and kick up a fuss and make them give you a refund. |

sorry, I should have said 'sony shop' but probably sony corporation don't have much to do with running it. Although sony ARE arseholes as I've had problems with them trying to charge £400 for a minor out of warranty repair in the past. Also, if they have laptops out there for sale they should have their specs published on their websites so people can check them rather than having to rely on retailers websites and sales bullshit artists. btw Dabs also advertise this laptop as a C2D so these people aren't they only ones misrepresenting.
I did bring it back and kicked up a fuss today but the manager was being an ass and insisting on checking with the sales person that I did actually ask and get the wrong information from the sales agent who conveniently is away on holidays until next week. Also, he's free to lie, as sales people tend to do. Or the manager could just ring me back next week and say tough luck. I think if they come back with a bullshit story, I'll look into cancelling the payment or getting a friend to send a threatening solictors letter. Failing that, there's the small claims court but then it's rapidly becoming more trouble than it's worth. I wonder can I cancel a visa debit card payment, it may even have already gone through. Anyone know anything about this? I'd rather get a straight refund but ... |

but couldn't you feasibly return the computer for any reason you deem fit? I mean lets say you buy it and then the next week a newer model comes out that you prefer. couldn't you just take it back and say that you don't want it?
I don't know about the UK but in the states you can usually take back practically anything within about 30 days to get a refund or at the least a store credit. |

I'm pretty sure the processor is working ok. it's just nowhere near as fast as a C2D, more like a dual centrino 1.8, which is probably roughly what it is. It is actually twice as fast in benchmarks as my old pc, so it's not all bad. But still, I wanted a different processor that is at least 50% faster again.
As for returning it for any reason, I think it has to be not fit for purpose, faulty or misrepresented or something. It genuinely was misreprented but they might continue to dispute that. My gf suggested it might find itself slightly broken somehow perhaps by the laptop fayries and then I can bring it back ![]() I keep having stupid problems with laptops but keep getting them anyway for convenience. I really like the sony displays but otherwise they piss me off. I'm going to start going back to building my own pcs after this time. |

you must have paid 500 quid or something - you dont get Centino Duo (with Core 2 Duo) in a notebook for that kind of cash. Did that not ring any alarm bells? oh well.
as for trusting a monkey in a shop to know shit... hahahahahahaha that's proper comedy. even funnier that you rang up and called them on the shit they talk. Always research yourself. Always check the exact spec before buying. Get conditions of sale in writing. Caveat Emptor |

I bought a Sony laptop recently, direct from sony not one of the shops, and they had a 7 day no quibble, no questions asked return policy with it. If it ain't good enough you can just send it back so long as you have all the original packaging.. Check the paperwork you got with it. Can't see why they won't have it back, especially if you want a more expensive model. ........................... www.1stGeneration.co.uk |

LT,
Quote them the following: Under the Sale of Goods Acts 1979, the 1983 ammendment, Section 13 this constitutes a "sale by description" whereby Subsection 1) there is a contract for the sale of goods by description, there is an implied term that the goods will correspond with the description and subsection 4) A sale of goods is not prevented from being a sale by description by reason only that, being exposed for sale or hire, they are selected by the buyer. In which case the sale may be repudated...ie.. you can get a full refund. ![]() |

johhny, what shite you are chatting. There are plenty of C2D laptops from £480-£550:
http://www.dabs.com/productlist.aspx...ffset=0#Paging I did check the specs sony had no specs listed yet (but the previous discontinued models which I actually went into the shop to buy is listed are c2ds) dabs listed it online as a c2d I asked the sales rep and he said it was a c2d nobody else had any details at the time as it's a brand new model. With hindsight I should have checked the processor number (t2130) with intel. Even there you have to do a bit of digging to find out. as for $500 dollars more for the c2d model, that's not true, it's only £50. Patrick is right, most retailers offer no quibble refunds. What I'm asking isn't unreasonable, I have a perfectly clean laptop with all the packaging, unused and unregistered. I'm willing to pay £200 more for the next model up. Cavaet emptor is complete bullshit in this case. Whuffle's sale of goods act is in full force here. I will get my money back even if I have to go to the small claims court, which I doubt. I don't see what's so funny about arguing my correct position. I've had this before with buying cars that have fucked up and got all my money back. You can't misrepresent what you are selling. You don't think you could get stung on eBay the same way some day when someone lists one thing and actually sends you another? |

fair enough - yer forgot T5500/T5300 have crashed in price the last few weeks. sorry for laughing - I was thinking about Santa Rosa Centrino 4s.
I guess it was more amused by listening to shop monkeys - cos I'd oly ever buy online after ready enough reviews etc. I guess its not funny though to be told something that's not true. |
