I'm going to move to London

Yes, I'm probably mad. And yes, I'm going against everything I've ever said about living in London for the past 26 years. But I'm fed up of being out in the middle of nowhere. Loads of my mates are moving to London, and frankly, shit all goes on up here. Shit all indeed.

I currently work in St Albans, and don't really want to move jobs, as I have a good job, happy with who I work with, and how much I earn, so I don't want to be further than an hour from my school. Which basically leaves me North London (Enfield, Cockfosters, Barnett way) or anywhere within 10 minutes drive (at 6:30ish) of the A1/M1.

Can anyone offer me any clues? I don't have any friends to move in with, they're moving South or Central London way, and I'm not too keen on moving in with complete strangers, so I guess I'll be renting somewhere alone. Don't mind a dodgy area, so long as I'm not likely to get mugged or broken into (any more than other parts of London).

not quite.. mainly me being stubborn and thinking that I wasn't one of these people who needed to move to London in order to make a success of my life. Oh how wrong was I. I'm going to turn into one of those people who tells everyone else that they have to move to London if they want to get ahead, and anyone who doesn't live in London is a baby.

@emef: are you really?

I heard they don't wash properly, either. Just put on another layer of deodorant.

I've been talking to various friends, and I could possibly live in Central or South London, so long as I can easily get to the Thameslink line to get into St Albans. So places on Victoria and Northern Lines, I guess.

not possible, as it's virtually impossible to get to St Albans in any reasonable amount of time from Hackney during the rush hour. Plus I'd like to move somewhere with tubes if possible.

Don't move to Enfield, Barnet or Cockfosters.

You'll regret it.

Anywhere north of camden is well grim on Thameslink.

Thameslink doesn't bring back good memories.

Get a job in London Loz, you won't get the full benefit of London if you're driving an hour to and from work through the rush hour - and you'll just end up hating it and blaming London.

I'm sure teachers in London are just as nice as Teachers in St Albans - could be a nice new start or something...

I will get a job in London, probably in the next year or so. But I want to move before I get a new job, really. Plus if I do drive/train to St Albans, I'll be going at the start of the rush hour (around 6:30ish) and in the opposite direction to everyone else.

You're absolutely right about the train going in the opposite direction to the rush going north on the thameslink (doesn't mean you'll get a seat however).... The same doesn't really apply to driving though, I wouldn't even consider it unless you have no other option.

from the research I've been doing, it'll take me longer to get to work from Brixton area than it does from where I am now, probably about an hour and 10 minutes or so. However, I won't be doing anything during that time, so it probably won't seem so bad.

The main reason I don't want to leave my job just yet is because it is amazingly cushy, and I don't really want to give that up unless I have to.

don't move to london if commute times get you down, some people are lucky.. but I'd say the average is about an hour.
