selling big stuff on ebay
right, i want to sell a nad amp which is quite heavy and that. How do you go about sending big heavy stuff on ebay cos i eventually want to sell a guitar. Whats the best way to do it, and how does it work? whats parcelforce like, do they still go on weight, where do they pick it up from? Or am i best just going to the post office and doing it there?

i'm not sure the post office would take anything that heavy, and you wouldn't want to trust them with handling something like that anyway. definitely go with parcel force. anyone who's going to buy something like that on ebay will be prepared to pay the shipping costs

Watch out for parcel2go...
They quote prices (which are ex.vat for starters) and then, when you actually 'buy' one of their products, on the last page, they whack on fuel surcharges too Yep, i know theres mention of them earlier, but the point is, the price they have in bold lettering on the front is nowhere near the price you actually pay. Depending on the value of the item, royal mail's 'standard parcels' service will probably work out cheaper than parcelfarce. I believe their both carried by parcelforce (unfortunatly) but you give your money to royal mail. Special delivery will carry up to, i think, 10kg too... Thats heavier than any guitar, isnt it? When you say 'nad amp' is that a hifi style amp, or somthing larger? Last thing i sent of any size was a prophet 5 keyboard... I used royal mail, but the cover was only to £500... |

its a nad hifi amp for spares, its quite heavy but im just testing the water to see how expensive/pain in the arse it will be for when i do my guitar. Whats the best thing to do then, take it up to the post office and see what they will charge?
dunno what the guitar weighs, but will they take the size of it? |

yeah, go to the post office first. if nothing else, you need to know what to quote for shipping when you sell it

Do you have the manual for the amp (or can you get it?) as itll have the weight in there. Way easier then messing about going to the post office and back.
Or, do you have some decent scales? Here is a link to the prices, for various weights, and the insurance costs, on royal mails website... |

i sold a dx7 through ebay, they're really heavy, bubble wrapped it up, took it to the main post office and sent it, easy... not wildy expensive, this was before the new weight rules, so things might be different cost wise

If you have the weight, then going to the post office for a quote is *way* more trouble than its worth.
I cant quite work out why, but only about 1 in 10 post office staff even know the different services that their trying to sell! Much better to work it all out yourself on the website, and just go in and tell them you want it sent by [x] service with [x] insurance, and you think its going to cost [x] ponds. That way they they dont get too confused. Even better, do it on a printout, and just hand it across to them, with the destination address on it too! : ) |

Above 12 kilos I tend to use parcelforce, especially as I've no car to take it to the post office. For a guitar or amp, I'd double box it and use a lot of packing and heavy tape. You can probably get the weight online in the marketing or spec or manual docs, like Julian says
