I've been recording loads of tapes recently, as a mate of mine bought an old school 80s boom box for festivals and nights out on the beach. For some reason, tapes are a lot cooler than CDRs and MP3 playlists.

I have a box of tapes that go back to mix tapes I made when I just started secondary school - they've seen better days, but can't part with them.

My mate found a cassette with the last remaining copy of a track on it that he was supposed to have had released in 96, but the label folded and the DAT was lost. He was over the moon to find this tape so he brought it into work today to let me hear it. The machine chewed it 2 bars into the intro.

MDK used to lose whole cassettes full of tracks that didn't exist anywhere else.. until other people started making copies for safety, everyone else seemed more bothered than Martin tho ![]() |

Yes.. started buying music as cassettes (instead of records or cd:s).
Did some trickery with double deck player. Pause button pushed half way, double speed recordings, tape upside down (unintentional)... Still have lots of tapes which are now and then recorded over again. Like carrying a boomblaster to the beach etc. in the summer. |

it took me a while to develop a philosophical attitude about it...i think the tapes were just part of the preparation for dealing with the great hard drive crash of '99. it was a very stern test and i remember feeling quite sad at losing over a years worth of music, but i think it worked out for the best..
probably. |

So does anyone have any opinions on the best quality cassette tapes?
I think I might get a stash while it's still easy. |

tapes for everrrrrr
i love tapes
i fondly remember making tapes with friends when i was in grade school (fake commercials and interviews, bad music and burping/farting contests). i have a tape deck in my Volvo and listen to em whenever i drive somewhere. a friend of mine and i have a tape deck dj crew where we have collected cass-singles and full albums of 85-93 era hip hop and gangster rap and mix them using a specific Technics tape deck that allows you to cue/rewind the tape and hear it when it gets to the beginning of a song. if it weren't for second hand and thrift shops, we wouldn't have the gems that we've found over the years. im always amazed when i go to record stores that have a tape section and the shit is still priced at $9.99-$11.99. who the hell is going to pay that much for an R.E.M. tape when you can just wait it out and find it at Goodwill for $1? |

I think reel to reels will be used in studios for many years to come.

Steve Albini apparently bought all the tape he could afford when he was told that people were going to stop manufacturing it a few years ago.

![]() Luca's got one of these - which I've started to listen to old tapes on in the garden. He's also turning into a mean little electro-acoustic feedback improviser with it. |
