Ableton + Cycling ‘74
![]() This makes Ableton seems more attractive to me... well one day. A new strategic partnership between Ableton and Cycling ‘74 promises exciting developments on the horizon for digital media creators, producers, and performers. Ableton CEO and cofounder Gerhard Behles and Cycling ‘74 CEO David Zicarelli are pleased to announce this unique alliance between the two dynamic and innovative audio/video software companies. http://createdigitalmusic.com/2007/0...-new-products/ |

that's good news. I'd be much happier if they went back to innovating rather than trying to add functionality that you can get elsewhere. Nothing they have added since version 4.0 has been a major addition, just lots of minor box-ticking things. Even 4.0 was a straightford VST host/MIDI add-on. They should stop trying to move the application closer and closer to vanilla cubase/sonar.

I guess if the open Ableton up to modification or control via Max/MSP they kind of can concentrate on the important boring stuff and let the community do the innovation. Could be great news for Max users too... not having to patch the real ground level stuff that Ableton provides. Of course it might just be that Cycling '74 are making them some synths ![]() |

So it seems like they are collaborating together on a whole new project:

I would love to see some sort of modular live performance thing out of this. A basic shell and modules based on live or something, but with the flexibility of programming/reprogramming everything to suit your performance needs.
I don't actually like Live, but it's the only software I feel even slightly comfortable with when playing live.. I've been building a live performance tool in Max, but been working on this for over two years now..... |

why not just use ableton for the audio and spend your time writing a nice Max GUI that you like. personally i don't mind them adding some of the features of other DAWs. simple because i don't want to use any other DAWs. since version 5 i really only work in Live. |

Because i just don't like it! I can't remember all the reasons off the top of my head, but there were some really stupid things that totally pissed me off about It. It just doesn't work how i'd like it to. I don't like the way it looks, I don't like the audio editor, the Midi sequencer is complete shite and it's expensive! But unfortunately it's the only audio and midi software flexible enough to use for livesets (imo). Using Nuendo/Cubase/Logic or whatever for live performance is just plain wrong! The way i like to think about my music is that I'm collaborating artistically with the machines (Raymond Scott said that in the 60's, but that's how i approach music production too). With Live i feel like I'm just telling them (the machines) what to do. Like Steve said, I'd like to have the boring/complex stuff like the instant pitch/time/bpm adjustment done for me, but have the freedom to add my own modules for sequencing, efex, sample manipulation etc... |

Funny how one mans meat is anothers poison. One of the things that attracts me to Live is the look. I really like it.
Have you ever thought of looking at other Cycling'74 software like http://www.cycling74.com/products/radial ? |

thembuzz was looking for a cheaper alternative to Live for live use. I forgot about Radial, it looks pretty good for that. |

Yeah Radial looks interesting! Still not quite what I'm looking for, but I'll have a go with the demo. The other reason I'd like to do something with Max is that if i don't have a goal for using it, i wont. And if i don't, it'll be a waste of lots of my time, brain power and money (errr)...

i wish ableton would just fix the bugs instead of feature bloat. Put in a decent shuffle and sell a real lite solid cheaper version

I think because I got the lite version free with ProTools and then upgraded it I never felt the pain of the cost.

ive bought it too. but i find 6 unstable and full of stuff i dont need. they should be optimizing it rather than adding something so they can release a new iteration.

i haven't had any stability issues with live 6 over 5. we i suppose i have some issues moving from the 6 beta to the ful version. they changed the way the library worked during the beta test and some people libraries had issues moving to the 6.0 release.
i'm with matt, i love the gui in ableton, it's clean and simple. it's really interesting, i've been teaching ableton classes here in nyc and through that i've met a lot of people and it's facinating to see the different ways they use the app. i've seen some really wild workflows that i would never have thought of. |

Live is a breezecool in my music production. In fact it let me be more creative when it's time for composing than anything else (I've tried Nuendo and cubase in the past). I spend a lots of time building modulars with a Nord Mod + Reaktors... in fact 2-3 years of sound design and not much as final track.
For this reason I didn't jump that much in Max/Msp... a second level of possibilities and another 2-3 years of learning curve and programming without finished tracks. I hope they will keep it ergonomic, innovative and creative with some nice built in add from Cycling74. |
