There's a really good new album called Afroganic by brit producer Kwame who went back to his family's origins in Ghana and hooked up with street musicians to make a house/disco record...

The Russ Dewbury comps mentioned in that blog are well worth checking. Gypo, next time you're down in Brighton get yersel along to the Jazz Rooms and you'll hear Dewbury playing a lot of good stuff in this style. Check out the obvious big hitters like Fela Kuti, Tony Allen and Femi Kuti for some good afrobeat action. Hugh Masekela is well worth checking too - there's a great BBE comp of his stuff and there's also a Carl Craig remix of The Boy's Doing It that's a total killer (which I still need a copy of). I've got some more albums at home that I'll go through later and post some more suggestions - can't remember names off the top of my head now. ........................... www.1stGeneration.co.uk |

The classic Afro-disco track of course is 'Soul Makossa' by Manu Dibango.

Soul Makossa is still knocking about on re-press 12" so should be easy enough to get hold of.

You should really check out some of Mory Kantes stuff from Senegal. He combines traditionall tunes with his "Cora" , with latin grooves and european "dance"...

I love Tony Allen's Black Voices, Hustler & Asiko. The maurizio mix of Ole is nice too.

Even though it's european (Cerrone/Moulton) and a mish-mash of styles, I really like Kongas - Anikana for the african percussion.

I never would have guessed Cerrone either. They might have have been listening to west coast US disco/funk cos it sounds more like War or someone like that.

Another thing worth checking out is Hugh Masekela's funk from the time when JB was god.
