Stop Windows, I wanna get off!
I was never much of a computer geek, although more than literate within the windows arena. I really do want to fuck windows off and get into something else, such as linux, or BeOS.
I do not know where to start. I also will want to retain some of the programs I am used to using now on Windows. I will want broadband internet access and to use audiomulch which is windows only (so far, available for mac in due course) the rest I can do without, so long as other people who are on windows can actually open things that I send (eg word processing) Advice, in words of one syllable to a layman, greatly appreciated ![]() |

If you're not a geek, you might find it hard on linux. Even modern distros have some glitches, especially when you plan to use not-open source software. But if you really want to do it, do as Yer_Maw said. Ubuntu/Kubuntu is very straightforward and now has probably newest packages. |

Oh yeah, and don't expect linux to look pretty right after install. It won't. You can make it look pretty, but you'll have to spend some time on it.

ubuntu dual boot is the way forward. just use package manager and you'll have few problems. You have to install stuff like MP3 codec and a decent player but even a mong could sort that out with his head typing stick

have to agree, if you're gonna go that route, then a duel boot linux distro (ubuntu) and windows will be sorted... i am going to do that to my pc laptop, (it's pretty crap) but with a nice "stable" linux os, and crappy old windows 98, i'll have a happy pc laptop

Dual boot is now a great choice as Linux ntfs driver with full write support became stable today
![]() So now you can fully share your partitions between systems. http://www.ntfs-3g.org/ |

BTW, audiomultch runs great under wine on my mac, so i bet it would run pretty well under linux as well. i've been using codeweavers crossover.

I love watching these things in action but anytime ive tried anything like this I turn it off after about 2 minute because I need to get stuff done and all this eye-candy just gets in the way.
actually if i still worked in an office i would use as much of it as possible. but i dont. |

How slowing a UI down can be an improvement... I'll never know... like the new Vista 'alt-tab' where you end up with the windows stacked isometrically.. pointless. It's like they tried to copy the OSX 'expose' function and totally missed the point.

everybody is just following the example shown by Apple. If you have a Nvidia card you really don't notice any slow down. and as Jobs has shown... shiny toys sells computers. i thought all apple macintoss users would be wanking right now?

i'm not talking about slow down due to graphics you mong ![]() I'm talking about a window just dissapearing instantly when you shut it, or changing to a new window/desktop being an instant switch.. rather than some harry potter cumshot with animation by a 14 year old. |

i think subtlety is the key. having all the windows open on your screen resize so you can see them all at once is very useful. if they happen to still play the video loaded into them then hey that looks cool. but having to navigate virtual desktops by spinning a 3d cube seems so much slower and unwieldy when it's meant to speed up working.
