Non-techno tastes (continued from Metal thread)

I'm a bit frightened to categorise my listening tastes, cos once I've started I'll never stop...

At the moment I am mostly listening to: melancholic shoegazing drone-rock (Slowdive, Galaxie 500, Mazzy Star, early My Bloody Valentine); jerky hardcore (Nomeansno, Melt Banana); lots of Prince and Curtis Mayfield; "bingo beats" style breakbeat garage taped from pirate radio; classic bop era jazz (Bill Evans, Lester Young, early Coltrane etc); loads of 80s pop and indie on BBC Radio 2; old-school jump-up jungle (eg early Ganja Cru / Aphrodite); Skacid; dramatic moody cigarette-smoking chanteurs (Scott Walker, Tindersticks, Pulp, Ute Lemperer); trashy yet somehow highly spiritual percussive composers (Moondog, Harry Partch); early church music (Palestrina); post-romantic, pre-serial Shoenberg; Commodore 64 post-dhr trash (Cursor Miner, Disk*a, Rorn); super-autonomous 70s crocheted-hat-wearing free jazz (Art Ensemble Of Chicago, Roland Kirk, Sun Ra) etc etc etc...

How old are you Knid, cos I haven't got a fucking scooby about most of the artists you just named there ......

If I think about my cd collection it seems to be drum n bass, techno, deep house,hip-hop,experimental, but all pretty much electronic. Oh and various Beatles albums and a tiny tiny bit of indie, but even that has an electronic element to it ...

I need to start listening to sumothersheeeat ....

I'm 27 but I'm too burnt-out to really go clubbing much anymore so I pass the large amount of time I have on my hands reading the Wire and histories of weird music and downloading nutsoid stuff from Audiogalaxy.

Sweet. I'm nearly 26 and I reckon I can give myself the title of "Burnt Out Clubber" too methinks ... It's been 10 years of madness but I think I'm now coming to the 'finding out about other music stage in my life' too.... dunno where to start like ....everything I like seems to some sort of club-connection ....

--Nice! I venture through a few of the sounds you've listed- Although, I think I will be forever sinking into Slowdive... I sometimes feel as if I am dragging my feet a little, but I have held Slowdive (and the likes) as my subtle, sleepy soundtrack for years... If you are interested to seek out a similar sounding band (one that you may not yet know)- Look for Siansperic- They are originally from the Hamiltion/Toronto (Canada) area.

I've been listening to a lot more rock lately... battling with some of my purist friends over the Strokes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club etc...

I'm listening to Kate Bush, Grace Jones, sun ra, The Pop Group and this band from the 80's called chrome. Also been going back to metal bands like cathedral, napalm death, slayer, early scorn, godflesh, etc... I feel sorry for those people who just stick to one kind of music, they don't know all the good stuff they are missing out

Apart from Techno I am mostly listening to Uk hip hop and punk (crass, dead kennedys) Sometimes I'll listen to some old stuff like napalm death, godflesh, carcass and old lady drivers and some old gabber (pre 95 before it got crap) and some industrial.

I was going to say that I listen to a lot of autechre and stuff but I class that as techno too so I suppose that doesn't count

Heh ..... the last time I was in 3-beat, I got a load of abuse from Andy Nick for slagging off vinyl cos I think cd is better.....not the best thing to do in a specialist record shop.

Probe's not bad, but if you haven't got a clue what you're looking for then you're screwed really .... that's probably why I always end up in the 'electronic area' .....

Radiohead, Janes Addiction/Deconstruction/Porno for Pyros, Mogwai, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Fugazi, Black Flag, They Might Be Giants, Talking Heads, Sand, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Belle and Sebastian, World Domination Enterprises (Asbestos Lead Asbestos!), Crass, Ramones, Velvets, Leonard Cohen, Jefferson Airplane i can't remember any more cause i don't listen to cds nearly as much as i used to. all my reserves of passivity and keeping up a normal appearance get used up at work so i can't be still for more than 4 seconds at a time in the evenings. which is really shit, come to think of it...anyone want to offer me a job where i don't have to sit in silence?

anyone who hasn't heard the deconstruction album should make the effort, its worth it for track 4 alone...

This record is fantastic, it really is. I can listen to it on repeat for hours.

jukka,

have you heard the cd massive attack vs the mad professor?
it's a semi-rare cd of massive attack being remixed by the
professor. real good.

off the top of my head

radiohead, godspeed you black emporer!, nine inch nails (basically only broken, fixed, the downward spiral and further down the spiral, reznor lost "it" after that imho), the residents, einstürzende neubauten, pan sonic, blondie, anything produced by melle mel, run dmc, outkast, company flow, dmx, loadsa stuph produced by timbaland, old b-52s stuph (planet claire, rock lobster...), ministry (they lost "it" as well, after the album with the unwritable name that is), x-ecutioners new album is gr8 except for the linkin' park collaboration (f*cking hate all forms of nu metal).
