Prostitutes

Does anyone else find it disurbing that the women which have been murdered in Suffolk are always refered to as 'Prostitutes' first and women second?

3 women mudered, all 'allegedly' pro's...cue "New Ripper!!" media blow out.

Its sad but it sells papers.

Yes and no. The newsworthiness of the article is that there is a pattern to the events: prostitutes are being targeted. So it would make sense to put that upfront. If the pattern revealed that the women were, say, lecturers, then I think the reporting would follow a similar format.

But, yeah, it is also disturbing. Possibly because of the socially-ascribed lower status of prostitutes. To put that upfront makes it seem like these are murders of 'marginal' types, and not individuals who have much societal worth at all.

I think if the police make a statement that the women worked as prostitutes it may be significant to the investigation but of course the media will inevitably focus on that with the 'ripper' conotations.

You don't find it disturbing that a lot of people think they had it coming and that the media will happily sensationalise the murders for a good headline?

Once someone is murdered the situation can't be made worse? That's pretty disturbing in itself mate!

Legalisation might help I reckon. Don't know any statistics to back this up but it seems likely...

Yeah man - I do (agree with you), but there's not much I can personally do about it., don't get urself worked up - it's not worth it, the poor women/girls are dead, that's bad enough without depressing ourselves over how moronic our countrymen/women are.

The national press are a bunch of banjo, cash whoring sensationalist asswipes - my saying so ain't going to change that.

Of course the media are selective about which murders they give column inches to and which they don't. It's similar with other crimes/newsworthy events.

When I worked at Sky News the journalists/subs/editors/directors got most worked up when there was a fire somewhere and they had good pictures of flames. 'Big flames! Big flames! Yeah!' . However, if there were hundreds of deaths but no good footage of the flames, they wouldn't even cover the story

It's not that obvious. It solves problems with prostitution, but can expand what's going on underground even further.

Look at Nederlands and Germany. No probs with prostitution, but massive underground with very unpleasant things happening there.

i haven't seen or read anything in the media that has suggested they had it coming. even the normally kneejerk, tabloid-reading, moralising dunderheads i work with don't think that

It's not the same in every country. Sex underground in UK or Spain or anywhere else is nothing compared to what happens in countries where prostitution (brothels actually, as that's what people usually mean) is legal.

There was, a wave of young girl kindappings in Poland around 1995 or 1996 (in ninetees anyway), which were later found in Dutch brothels. It's less common now, as EU made it easier to track, but still happens. I bet now it moved further east.

Look at those illegal polish labour camps in Italy uncovered this year. And that was illegal to start with. Imagine what may be happening where brothels are legal (as prostitution is actually legal in most countries).

If it was legal to have sex with 15 year old girl, then it would be much easier to cover up having sex with 13 year old.

You really don't think there is bias in the press about the importance of certain people over other people? Are you as stupid as you look?

steev, i'm normally with you on most stuff but i don't get what you're saying in this thread.

if the common link was blokes with beards i'm sure they'd say "two more blokes with beards missing". All the press i have read is very sympathetic to their position and doesn't make abusinve comments about what they do. nobody i know thinks they deserve it and my mum who lives near Ipswich is pretty nervous for herself and the girls we know.
