Warming up for their soon come twelve for the excellent Hand On The Plow label, Spandex drop four big tunes on Cristian Vogel’s after hours label Sleep Debt. “I love my v50” goes at it all harem scarem – like soundkit taken off the ritalin – very wonky indeed. “Rag and bones” delivers the true juice – bare-boned rhythms, but with enough adroit sense of composition to still emerge as a big tune, not a tool. “Death on hold” orbits a subversion of a telephone holding mechanism, jacking it up before really bending minds. But the highlight has to be the viscous funk of “Tepid Water” – boogie tempo and with a seismic bass line to match, let’s make like it’s 1982 – c’mon! Huge

Cristian Vogel may be moving away from straightforward floor-fillers in his own work, but he's still scratching that itch on his own Sleep Debt label-- or rather letting others, e.g. Spandex, scratch that itch for him. Last.FM says that Spandex's "Tepid Water" is approximately four times as popular as his "I Love My V50", which only confirms that my listening habits are radically out of step with, like, everyone in the world. (Time to dust off that Minor Threat t-shirt.) Make no mistake, "Tepid" is faboo-- slow and churning over a slothful bassline and an apple-crisp hip-hop beat; the gravelly Speak 'n Spell vox is plenty cheeky too ('cept cheek rarely blushes so blackly). But Spandex, who you may know from his (Lies) single on the excellent Hand on the Plow label, really shows his mettle on the 4'33" "V50", which in spite of its track time is hardly quiet. No, it's a relentless, Chicago-flavored banger of a choon, all pointillist chords and hiccups, with demure little synth washes to draw you close and big, ugly 909 claps and snares to smack you back. Nasty.

Cristian Vogels Sleep Debt label soll sich ja - namensgemass - vor allem jener Musik widmen, die nach dem ersten Hahenshrei auf den Teller gehort. Nach den ersten vier Releasen lasst sich bereits ein Afterhour-Verstandnis ablessen, das vor allem Spass und Funk betont und uberraschend unfrickelig daher kommt. Spandex liefert drei herrlich verspielt und -spulte Technotracks ab, die allerdings gegenuber dem brillianten Downtempo-Vocoer-funk von "Tepid Water" ungerechterweise fast schon blass wirken. Ein fulminantes Fullhornchen, diese Platte.
