britain now officially sleepwalking through its grim existence

Most British workers are satisfied in their jobs, a survey revealed today.

The poll of around 1,000 people showed that almost 78% of people are either very or quite satisfied with their current employment, and more than two-thirds said their jobs were a source of personal satisfaction.

@ lighter thief: the fact that people like their jobs isn't, by itself, depressing. if people liked their jobs because they were good, fine and dandy. but jobs aren't good. jobs, on the whole, are bad. as i remember it, life in employment is a miserable, endless grind of drudgery. i wonder how many of those people are doing a job they would've picked for themselves in a more open market. not many, i'll reckon

It's certainly surprising. Out of everyone I know friends, family, acquaintances, colleagues etc. it's more like 40-50% or something.
So it does sound like similar propaganda to stories about how having sickdays costs the nation £400 Billion a year or something.

people are a lot more attached to their jobs now than in the past. jobs used to be (for me, anyway) a 9to5 you did to pay the bills. now, a job is a big part of your lifestyle. there are up sides and down sides. you work longer hours but then you get more out of it.

i was reading again about the massive increase in binge drinking. i reckon the work-hard-play-hard ethos is being taken to it's logical conclusion...

It'll all be based on meaningless and loaded survey questions like

"Do you find your job 100% unsatisfying?"...

1000 isn't a very big sample size to then make massive claims like '78% of all people like their jobs'

stupid fucks. reminds me of all the bullshit audience research nonsense we get fed at my work. everyone just believes it unquestioningly because media types always believe numbers unquestioningly. they don't like to think about numbers other than to make outrageous claims based on them.

it's like here (and i'm sure everywhere else) the government keeps announcing "record job figures" every few months, thousand of new jobs created........mostly in fast food restaraunts and call centres! and of course no one sticks with those jobs long enough to be truly miserable, they just move on to another one, and another....

I don't particularly like my job. But the people there make it worthwhile. Plus having a job is better for me than having no money.

I think Thembuzz has a point.

Given the massive cost of living in this country, the insane house prices, the insane rental prices, the gap between the rich and the poor – then it is surely a testament to the television and consumer industries in this country that people are relatively happy with their lot.

I love my job, but I still think it’s a shit deal, but I’d rather be doing it, than sitting at home struggling on a dole cheque. I live in hope that it’ll lead to something good. I also know that that something good involves a lot more work than I’m currently putting in. I also know that if I didn’t wear myself out so much doing this job, then I might be in a position to do that work to find something that is pleasurable and a good deal.

"Do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk, ice cream? Ice cream, Mandrake? Children's ice cream!...You know when fluoridation began?...1946. 1946, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual, and certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works. I first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love...Yes, a profound sense of fatigue, a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence. I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women...women sense my power, and they seek the life essence. I do not avoid women, Mandrake...but I do deny them my essence."

I don't see how a survey of a thousand people is a testament to anything more than poor surveys and that anonymous group of a thousand people surveyed originally.
