What's 'open source software' when it's at home?

Just what it says Orang.

The source is open. The source being the code. It's open to other people using it.

yeah everyone could make a different orang utan mum to fuck.
you could have orang Tangs mum with pink mascara and the leather tank top she lends to her son. Or you could have orang tangs mum painted with UV paint on her naughty bits.

I've just looked open source on Wiki and am still none the wiser - I don't think I'll ever understand these strange machines

it's really pretty easy, orang utan. opensource software is not only freely available for use, but also the source/code/algorithms are for everyone to see. so you can see how the software is written, how it's functioning. that code is also free to everyone for use. so you could write a programm based on algorhitms of an opensourceprogram (provided you'd use the same licence for publishing)

if cocacola would give their drinks away for free and would make their recepts public and allow everyone to make their own cola out of that recept, they'd be opensource (somehow)

It's quite simple really. The important fact is that open source software is essentially free and you can change it to suit your needs if you have the technical skills.

Richard Stallman is the daddy of open source. He 'hacked' the planet.

If my gran released her sherry trifle recipe upon the world so that other folk could try and replicate or make a better version (doubtful).
That would be theorectically an open source trife.

free to modify, add to, or in some cases sell. the point is that if you use open source, then what you add or modify must be open source as well.

for example. linksys made a router with open source software. this got found out and they had to publish the details of the router, and now people have made mad modifications for it.

That's probablty the best explanation so far - cheers Tec
Tis like Coca Cola giving away their recipes for everyone to make their own coke?

kindof, its like coca cola giving the recipe away, but if you modify it and make it better, you have to also give the recipe away.

subtle difference in this example is that coca cola would probably be a collective of individuals giving their time away for free, rather than a company

That's only half true, when you use GPL software you have to make your product available on GPL as well. There are other types of licenses, for example Apache, that don't require you to do so, and the software is still open source.
