next gen mac is here?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4600442.stm
according to this, new macs will ship with intel processors from the 10th january.. which is yesterday. So are these G6s? or what? ........................... "If you can't tell what genre the track you're making is you should have your instruments taken away and made to stand in the corner." |

Its funny, we were talking about this yesterday...and today they go public. It looks the nuts, MacBook Pro..not sure i like the name but the spec is incredible. It will literally fly. Can't wait to have another go on one. ........................... "Menzies and Calum merked that crew down bruv!" - Menzies and Calum killed those people badly my friend. |

apparently some apps don't run aswell on the intel chips - there has to be a Rosetta running to bridge the gap between the old coded apps to run on the new processors.
but they look the nuts. |

As I mentioned in the other thread... no Firewire800.. which the standard powerbook has had for over 2 years. They are also only showing renders, it's the classic 'bodged first iteration' from Apple. Seems like they have really rushed it out. How often do Apple release a product as important as this with a brand new name and yet not re-style it? Not that styling is important but it does suggest it's rushed...
Always better to wait for at least the second iteration with those fuckers. I will be buying one... |

dual core yonah, these big macbook pro's. look to be pretty much at the cutting edge of technology and speed. only a few recently announced pc laptops can match the speed and specs of the macgyver pro. I think its great how apple have followed exactly what the mac fanboi's have been clamouring for over the past few months. just need a triple boot solution for x,linux, and xp, and maybe a revision with firewire 800 two trackpad buttons and we're in geek heaven. |

Agreed Pencilneck, two button trakpads would be sweet. Very surprised that frewire 800 has been omitted...
i too will wait for rev II editions. ........................... "Menzies and Calum merked that crew down bruv!" - Menzies and Calum killed those people badly my friend. |

Why is firewire 800 so important, what requires 800 rather than 400?

I've seen that also, usb 2 is winning the battle to become the standard.

USB2 is 480 Mbit/s FW800 is 786.432 Mbit/s.
I can can stream 24 tracks of 48k stereo and full quality DV from two FW800 drives, I somehow doubt I could do that with USB2. USB2 is fine for consumer applications but it doesn't seem likely it will take over from FW800.. of course thats not to say Apple won't fuck up.. |

usb v firwire
no comparison, the only reason usb 2 gets the debate going is because its a standard commonly associated with PeeeCeee's aswell as Macs, Firewire 800 is more often than not a Mac thing...additional PCI cards aside that is. ........................... Apple no longer supply iPods with free firewire cables.. only USB2 cables. It's purely an economic decision based on the fact they now sell to PC users as well. It has no bearing on the professional products or applications.

dropping the FW800 does seem to be a bit of fuck up - 'specially considering the number of musicians that must use these - maybe they should try speaking to their logic audio department...

and no dramatic price drop either - maybe we'll see it with the consumer ibook. I really thought with them using Intel that they might pass some saving over to the customers - alas it seems not...

400 quid difference between buying in the US and UK for the entry level model Macbook, almost worth a shopping trip to New York i reckon if you were gonna buy one.
@ Ian; im surprised at the price range too, i thought they come in at £1100-£1200 inc VAT (entry) and £1400 for the high end. Silly bugger's. ........................... "Menzies and Calum merked that crew down bruv!" - Menzies and Calum killed those people badly my friend. |

I did consider doing that with my powerbook.. but how likely is it that you'll go to new york and not spend any more money ![]() Also the hassle of warranties and applecare blah blah didn't really seem to make it worth it. @grobs: I think the cost balance with Apple is skewed a lot more towards design hours rather than components... |

Sure the marketing people may say that, but the fact is Intel chips are cheaper than PowerPC, the laptop has less features (no FW800), etc etc. Seems like a rush job. I'd write a complaining mail to Apple and wait till the next revision comes out mid 06...
The only thing going for it, is the dual processor - which you'll probably need as everythign will be running under Rosetta for the next year or so. |

look lets not beat about the bush here, they are rip off bastards charging a fortune for look and feel. (apple branded memory, haha). Dont get me wrong, its good, os x is fantastic to use, but its behaviour that would have some folks waxing lyrical about the evils of marketing, design and advertising if it was any other industry.

The value for money is less definitely. But the quality is higher, it just depends what is important to you I suppose.
