Will modern British films ever get a cult following

or will they be considered - rightly - to be fucking shit in all perpetuity? Shopping, 51st State, Blue Juice, Dog Soldiers... these truly are the worst films imaginable.

Had to do the video compression for Dog Soldiers (to put it on DVD) meaning i had to watch the sodding thing millions of times. I'd certainly agree with you there. The great movies were old ones like The Wicker Man etc. Even the worst Hammer stuff is miles better than the fucking shit you mentioned.

(edit) thought my post seemed a bit harsh so I had a look here :

http://www.filmsite.org/brit100_1.html

(the BFI's list of the top 100 20th Century films)- it confirms what i thought- the best ones are all old, maybe a Loach here and a Leigh there and a Gilliam or two but nothing worth writing home about since the late 80's

I disagree. there have been some real gems of late. dead mans shoes, my summer of love, the constant gardener to name but a few.

Leigh and Loach seem to be fairly consistant in producing great stuff.

Shane Meadows also deserves a cult following:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0575079/

edit: great minds think alike.

Dead Man's Shoes has to be one of my favourite films of all time. Must have seen it about 8 times now from showing it to various people. A Room For Romeo Brass is good too.

MR knid

as far as the 51st state is concerned, was samuel l jackson actually involved as a producer???

it was a pretty sordid excuse for ole yankee doodle dandy to rip the piss out of the english

trouble is, they did it coz they're pig sick jealous of the one thing they can and never will have...sarcasm!!!

RIGHT

you want cult english films??? i know people in prague who luuurve LOCK STOCK, and SNATCH, alright it isn't quadrophenia bu give em time

ok, to cut it short, I wouldn't worry coz we are identified from far away by our media in general, our own public identify more with our comedies and serials because they are current,(we also excel at these) the rest of the world focuses on our musical achievements and decide to discover the rest later on ( if they choose to visit for example) where we LACK in establishing a GLOBAL cult film following is that here, unlike america ( usa), our film style can only be understood or appreciated fully by people that have spent a bit of time here....any doubts? why do all our music exports also fail cataclysmically when offered a chance to 'take the states??'

sorry but when i went there, it took me more than a week to realize i wasn't watching tv, right down to the circular windows in the house we were staying in,

IRONICALLY, our culture in film is as much the stuff that CULT is made of as something even as 'slapdash pseudo cult rip off ' ( and i still love it) as PULP FICTION, possibly a lot more, take a quick glance at the re runs on men + motors and itv4 if you're not sure

generally, CULT is a modern thing, LEGEND is older than we can remember, we have produced and been subjected to both

quite liked that 'second coming' mini series on itv with whatshis name from doctor who in it....

What are you sorry about? What are you trying to say? You just wrote a very long mail and I didn't seem to actually get any information from it

Enjoyed that too, but part of me thinks it's only 'cos I love the Mondays/New Order/Joy Division/Factory- did anyone who doesn't love these bands enjoy it? And what was 8 songs like? (same director)

9 songs you mean. i thought it was really bad. it's pretty much just this couple going to see trendy band of the day in concert (franz ferdinand, black rebel motorcycle club etc) and then fucking each other silly. it's mind numbingly boring. i don't care why he made the movie or what it's supposed to say to people...it's like watching paint dry.

I watched dead man's shoes and I thought it was rotten to the core, seriously boring and a bit like a racy episode of the bill.

I have spoken to loads of other people who say that it's fab - can someone please tell me what I'm missing?

I liked the first half of Shawn of the Dead, then it just got dull and ran out of ideas I thought.

I thought 28 days later started really well too actually.. and then went terrible at the end.

You must have missed the whole point in the film then, either that or it's a really poor trolling attempt.

Yeahh, that's a good one, coincidentally another I helped compress for DVD, and it was a welcome relief from all the Hollywood rubbish, but yes, a 'nutkicker' of a film
