binaural mic? is that the mic you have two capsules at both of your ears to get the "real" stereo effect?

yes. it has a microphone inside each ear. it mimics the way a person hears sounds. so the ears that are created filter out frequencies like our ears do. if you put on a pair of headphones hooked up to the mic and lets say jingle some car keys around the head, in your head phones you will hear where the keys are. for instance, if the keys are jingling and are placed right on top of the back part of the head it will sound like the keys are right on top of your head. if you close your eyes so you can't see what the person is doing to the keys and that person moves them all around the head you will clearly be able to tell where they are because the binaural mic mimics human hearing so acuratly. it is a really cool piece of technology.

I can't remember, but I do know they were a bit pricey.
but you could always make your own. I was told there were instructions on how to do it on the web. not sure where exactly. |

a friend of mine has a pair of these wonderful bits of technology, i think they are around 4-500 €. that's quite a lot but not really out of reach, isn't it? if you want to do field recordings that's probably the best way to do it.
i borrowed them once and did a few recordings (railway tracks - with train mind, storm,..), the quality was great. as sheridan said, you have a total roomy feeling to it, hear where everything comes from and disappears at. an interesting thing to know would be, if they use the ears to absorb the sound and every person has different ears, does that affect the recording, would that be hearable? |
