Poppies have come to represent spilt blood, not only because of their colour, but because the battlefields rapidly turned into meadows awash with poppies and other flowers due to the blood-enriched soil.

oh yes. the earl haig poppy fund.

Quote:
In 1916 Haig was responsible for the Battle of the Somme, which cost 420,000 British casualties over four months for minimal gain. The next year saw further stalemate: the US entered the war in April but the French command wanted to stay on the defensive until the first of the Americans arrived. This frustrated Haig, who was subordinate to the French general Robert Nivelle. From May he was given more authority and determined to defeat the Germans with a purely British offensive. The resulting Third Battle of Ypres from July to November 1917 (also called Passchendaele) saw further enormous British casualties that shocked the public back home.

We're about to endure one of the most teeth-grindingly awful moments of the year when Blair will look sombre and pretend to care about those who died in war... before scuttling back behind his plexiglass screen and giving the order to drop bombs on somebody else.

Someone ought to tell the heartless cunt that "lest we forget" is supposed to be about not letting it happen again.

hell, on our memorial day we don't have to go to work.
so people go out and shop and drink and eat.
we really know how to do it.
