the freestyle favourite dj thread

it seems we're always having bloody threads about techno deejays, and as much as i like the music, i don't go to a lot of straight-up techno nights and therefore i don't have an awful lot to say about them. so i thought i'd start a thread for the wittering about deejays of all genres

for me it has to be dj dexter of the avalanches. i only saw him once, like, at sanky's soap a few years back, but it was one of the most memorable nights i've ever had (despite the fact that most of it is a complete blur). how many of you can lay claim to having danced to system of a down's chop suey! in sanky's, eh? eh? and i think he might even have segued into it from n*e*r*d's brain, though memory may not serve me too well

my second vote goes to si begg for a sterling breaks set at fubar earlier this year

Coldcut and DJ Food. They might be a bit more predictable these days and have a tendency to slip into comedy styles but they are still the greatest. I remember seeing them play at the old Concorde in Brighton on 4 decks and it was insane. They kept dropping snippets of Roy Ayers 'Sunshine' at different tempos, over acid tunes, over hip hop, over d&b and at one point over Squarepusher 'Conumber', which had just come out... when they finally played 'Sunshine' in its entirety the place predictably went off like a rocket.

Theo parrish plays a pretty wide variety of styles - he's grrrreat. I really enjoyed Tommy McIntosh a few months back who played mostly house but with a bit of soul, disco and finished with One Nation Under A Groove, which was quality. And a mention must go to Gilles Peterson for his varied DJ sets with everything from Garage to reggae to jazz. I love djs who refuse to stick to one genre because its far more exciting not knowing whats going to happen next rather than expecting yet another 2 hours of techno, doing the same dance and occasionally putting your hands in the air during a breakdown and going "woooo yeah!"

That's my line! In my one and only freestyle battle, the only decent line I came up with was "your dad is Morph and your mum's a dwarf and you couldn't rock if you was a Romanian orphan"!

Second the votes for Twitch, Ed DMX and the Spymania hit squad. Actually I would widen the Spymania one to include the fre-for-alls that used to happen in the "glory days" of Trash Records. Brutal but brilliant.
