'gay' as a negative adjective...

I can't pin-point when or how it suddenly become really popular to describe something that is crap or rubbish as 'gay' but I find it really creepy and just wrong.

So I've been wondering, is it acceptable? Doesn't bother me, because I don't use it personally. But I'm just wondering whether I've just become sensitive to it, whether it has had a surge amongst popular slang terms and if so who or what has caused this popular. For some reason I've got like mini-metallers/goth/emo/alternative kids pegged as to blame...

Or am I just being overly sensitive - I mean I don't know - do gay people use the word to describe things as being crap too.

a gay friend of mine uses the word "gay" to describe something as crap. I think it's mainly used in the sort of childish way that certainly people of our generation said it in the school ground

Gunny I saw that you had replied and was 90% sure that you would have posted something like that picture of the 70s dude with the towel across his chest, finger pointing out of the picture with the words 'You are Gay' emblazoned across the front...

there was a bit of an uproar from elements of the homosexual community for kids telling a teacher something was 'gay' thinking they were infering that it was rubbish to be homosexual... but always a bit of a none issue because it actually means happy.

It is very much in use amongst my friends and associates.. which includes one gay couple and some others who are bi.. the "in" insult right now, is "gay cunt"

I can't think of one person that I know who wouldn't apologise profusely to any member of the gay community who found it truely offensive.
Personally, I think that what is or is not offensive usually depends on how it is meant and should be taken as such. Sometimes words are used out of ignorance too, and this should be corrected.

In fact, this gives me a chance to ask a delicate question:

the term "nigger" was orignally short for "negro" and as such, is merely a statement of fact in terms of the person's race.

However it was used in a very derogatory way, and became very offensive because of the way it was being used by racist bastards. So much so, that as a white lower-middle class guy in middle England, I loath the term when used that way. REALLY offensive.

As a consequence, this was turned on its head. Some black people now use the word as a term of affection, semi-humourously.

Heres my question to all you black dudes who read this... would that word be offensive to you if used by a white guy but meant in the same way as another black guy might use it? I am just curious as to how these things work socially.

What I am trying to get at.. is whether or not a word is inherantly offensive, or whether the attitude of the person using it is the real problem.

I love the word "Niggard” which is an old word in English meaning “miser” or “stingy”. and not racist at all... you dumb fucking niggard.

one of my punjabi mates calls me a stupid paki - because he's had it all his life and is blatently sikh so thinks if white people can call him a paki he can use it too, ironicly... not sure if their isn't a tinge of the battle over the kashmir and the partition.

I don't know about anyone else, but I find the word nigger to be a horrible word. It's not just what it means or how it's used, although that is a big part of it, but it's just a horrible sounding word.

Racism is something I am heavily against, if I found out that one of my friends, even one of my best friends, was a racist, I would find it very difficult to remain friends with that person, it disturbs me so much.

And yet, sometimes in the company of friends, we sort of do "play racism" with each other. For example a friend of mine is Jewish, and spends every Easter day making V-signs with his fingers and saying "yeeeaaaah! it's the one day of the year where we won!" which cracks me up all the time.

I can't remember who said it, but it was about a year or so ago. The quote went something along the lines of:

"Of course Jesus was black. He called everyone brother, liked gospel and couldn't get a fair trial."

funny.

I think I managed to beat that by saying (and 100% meaning) that Isrieli Jews and Palestinian Muslims have a common heritage. They have only recently acquired traits that outwardly emulate the separate localised gene pool. This is often a recessive throwback of intermarriage of an earlier ancestors. Blonde jews in sweden are no less middle eastern in heritage than Hasidic jews in Stoke Newington or Palestinian Muslims.

shock horror. I was accused of being a cunt for that one and did I want a fucking smack in the face? hahahaha

Black and white, no... totally agree,

But the entire POINT of my post was EXACTLY that the traditional western view (brought to us via the catholic church, just as you say) is that jesus was a white dude. er... NO.

Actually, it doesnt feckin MATTER what colour he was.. or it shouldnt. But I love to annoy the fuck out of narrow minded twats by pointing out mere facts.....

bleh, hate when people use "gay" as a negative adjective.

the connection between being gay and being low quality it implies is pretty shit, but really i just hate it because it's so boring.

lacks any imagination whatsoever. there are millions of good insults out there. use them you cunts.

Yeah, we're singing from the same hymn-sheet then Warren.

The reason I asked the question in the first place, is we are always being told what is or isn't ok by commitees of self-important, self congratulatory, priviliged people who's best move would be to shut the fuck up and listen to the people they claim to represent.

Actually, I had a bad taste in my mouth just typing the word, but if I'm gonna ask a controvertial question, might as well do it properly!
