ID cards can't be properly implemented until:
A) BS 8766 (Naming Standard for individuals)
and
B) BS 7666 (Spatial Datasets for Geographical Referencing)

Have been fully implemented on all government information systems. They are still at least a year from getting BS7666 up and running in most areas.

Most local authorities have not even started considering BS8766 yet.

So you probably have 3 or 4 years before ID cards are a reality.

As for biometrics: if you are a non-US citizen and you enter the USA at the moment you will get a photo taken and your fingerprints scanned as well. I have already been scanned 2 or 3 times.

such a fucking joke, biometrics on the one hand but 10 year renewal on the other.

ignoring of course the pretty crappy success rate for biometric authentication...

EAR-shape analysis could be better than face recognition at automatically identifying people.

Mark Nixon, a biometrics expert at the University of Southampton, UK, has developed a technique to capture the shape of an ear and represent it in code. Unlike faces, ears do not change shape over time.

In an initial study using pictures of the ears of 63 people, Nixon and his colleague David Hurley found their method to be 99.2 per cent accurate. Nixon thinks this could be improved.

The technique could be used to identify people from CCTV footage, or incorporated into mobile phones to identify the caller, says Nixon. The study is due to be published in the journal Computer Vision and Image Understanding.

From issue 2509 of New Scientist magazine, 23 July 2005, page 23

They can fuck off. No way I'm ever entering that place, besides, I wouldn't be able to stop myself backchatting and would be straight back on the flight home.

hey man i am american and they still did this to me. they took one look at my passport and said: oh you have been to chiiiiiina eh?

made me stand where i could not read the p.c. screen as the guy undoubtedly typed something to the fbi about me being a subversive. they held me half an hour upon returning to MY OWN COUNTRY just to fuck with me about EVERYTHING they could think about.

nevermid that the visa he was refering to was for taiwan.... which is for all intents and purposes INDEPENDENT FROM CHINA. fucking idiots. GOD I HAVE COME TO HATE MY OEN PPL! SERIOUSLY!

americans are so serious about themselves. i just dont get it! it seems like every american i met upon returning is walking on eggshells to preserve some fragile self esteem, or is completely parranoid about the most retarde, inconsequential things. i didnt even get along with Pille' after all! not talking shit here john or trying to open a can of worms, but i think it is safe to say we don't get along eh?

anyway america is such a joke now! what happened to the lovely country in which i was raised?

I guess the british public will be paying for the changeover to biometric passports, out of their own pocket?

whcih other European countries currently / are going to adopt biometric passports?

battered old passports with dodgy photos have their own special kind of charm....
