Cristian Vogel - 1968 Holes EP - Release Info
![]() Artist - Cristian Vogel Title - 1968.Holes Label - NOVAMUTE Format - 12 Catalog No. - 12NOMU151 Release Date - 20/06/2005 Tracklisting 1968.Holes (Album Version) Zilch (Exclusive track - not on the album) 1968.Holes (12 remix by Cristian Vogel) The electronic maverick Cristian Vogel is back with a new album in the shape of Station 55 on the 4th July and this preceding single, the techno-funk workout of '1968.Holes'. Featuring the crazed electro-punk acid queen vocals of Kevin Blechdom, '1968.Holes' vortexes around a relentless panic of scything atmospheres and a solid kick-drum of dancefloor slaying proportions. For all of Cristians more abstract excursions, here we find him locked down in the groove and ready to rumble across the globes finer sound systems. Like techno itself, Cristian is avowedly internationalist, acknowledging the importance of places but refusing to be tied to them. Though many have tried to use the fact of his South American birth, or his strong ties with Berlin (and the Tresor label in particular), to bundle him into particular movements or sounds, he has always managed to mutate and escape the confines of others definitions. Just as techno is not defined just by its own origins and outposts in Detroit, Berlin, Glasgow wherever - but by the actions of every person across the continents that is playing it at any given moment, so Cristians life and work are defined by the totality of his travels and the global reach of his music. Currently based in Barcelona, Cristian is also heavily associated with the seaside town of Brighton and his tenure there spawned many an alternative club night (including the legendary Freekin The Frame), as well as other artistic collaborations which galvanised the No Future / Erutufon organisation. Key amongst these was the collaboration with Jamie Lidell that sensationally welded the worlds of live funk and techno as Super_Collider. Previous albums such as Absolute Time and Body Mapping helped to put Vogels sound on the international map in the early 1990s, and later releases such as his 'Trurl and Klapaucious' alter ego on Supremat and Rescate 137 on Novamute showed just how far he had developed as a producer. Most recently with production work for Chicks On Speed, Panico and Super_Collider, and work on international art and contemporary dance projects, Cristian is flexing his production muscles to full stretch. Here we find Cristian ripping up the rule book once more. '1968.Holes' pulses with industrial tension, dark acid menace and the screeching, pitched vocals of Kevin Blechdom. 'Zilch' furrows a mellower, electrofied breaks route but still firmly lurks in the darker recesses of your mind whilst finally Cristian reworks the original into a strung out, sweat drenched, hypnotic mix of epic proportions. |

International DJ Magazine July 2005
The original track here is laidback and relies on the crazed 80's disco acid vocals of Kevin Blechdom. Not really my thing, but Vogel's 12" rework most certainly is, as the beats are pumped up for the dancefloor and the track is drenched with 303 acid stabs, which is always going to find favour with this reviewer. The final track of the release, 'Zilch', features a crazy-sounding Frenchman, and comes on like the soundtrack to one of those 50s French film noirs. That is until some seriously heavy breakbeats kick like a mule and he introduces some manic squelchy bass. It kind of makes you wonder what the hell Vogel is on, but it sure makes you want some too!
