Jacking it in

Do y'all ever get sick of working slavishly in the shitey northern european/eastern US climate?

I sometimes think of selling up everything and moving somewhere sunny and cheap to do my own thing, start a small business and so on. Tec, was this your plan too? I wonder where might be a good place to go?

Sorry, I'm dreaming out loud... it's raining heavily here today.

I could live in brazil and I'd be just as pale, so I guess I don't care, job or no job.

That being said, I wouldn't mind a place that doesn't make me curse it and the god that created it every winter walking home from work/the shop/the weed dealer

One of my more cynical mates has regular moments of going "fuck it, I'm going to go and live in Ibiza and weave leather belts to sell on the beach". Maybe he'll do it one day.

sheeeit, i aint never leavin the 'diff. this city is like a pair of your most comfortable old shoes, annoyingly knackered and familiar but oh so comfy when you try em on after a while.

excuse the shite. little sleep, drive to bristol and back at 7am and now got a double shift in work surviving only on coffee and daydreams.

i feel an edit coming on...

Are you trying to make an income from music? Is it working out ok?

As for which business, maybe a small software company of my own.
But even running a bar, cafe or shop would be better than this salaried slavery.

Friends of mine moved there in October.. very suddenly.. they just decided "fuck it". They do a couple of trips to India each year and buy a shitload of "haberdashery" then sell it online and at markets. It's a great place to go cos it's lush (if u go to the quiet bits of the island) and in season, the flights to/from the UK are ludicrously cheap.

Gonna go stay with them in September. raaaa.

Have you done that sort of thing before? I did it a couple of years ago (was actually running another company before that.. but it had got big and started turning into a 'job').

I have this conversation with friends quite a lot... I spend ages trying to put them off.. then if they're still really up for it even after I've told them about how skint I am... and about my debts.. and how much work I have to do sometimes.. THEN I tell them about the good side, the flexibility, job satisfaction and how I'm generally much happier these days.

No, I have only a little experience in the business side. I have experience in research and development, though. So there would be a lot to learn.

It would be nice to control a project for once rather than have most of the important decisions (like what you are building) outside of your control.

I have a decent amount of money saved but not enough to start a business in the UK or Ireland. It is very expensive to get started here without getting into big debts.

Software dev is a tough one... cos the dev phase necessarily won't produce any revenue... so you have to be able to survive for the period you're developing... and, in my experience, then you have to support yourself for about 5 times as long as you expected whilst you try to sell enough to make some cash. Do you do selling? I hate it.

So maybe yr plan of going somewhere cheaper/nicer to do it is a good one... but I'd still make sure you budget for it all taking MUCH longer than you expect to get to breakeven. Then when you think you've overestimated it enough to be safe, double it

Oh also, I'd be screwed if I didn't have a business partner. Partly it means that we can work quicker.. and partly we both need each other to stay focussed and to tell the other one when we're talking shit or heading off down the wrong path.. or even just normal stuff like meaning that one of us can take a week off every now and then. You maybe don't need anyone else to work with... but IMHO, a lot of people do.

Let us know if you go for it.. n good luck.

Like Brighton? Everywhere has good bits and shit bits.

I've been to some really lush bits of Ibiza. All we had to do was hire a car and drive for 15 mins away from the tourist bits (which *are* offensively shit and full of the worst kind of twat).

They live out in the hills and the view from their window is just hills and trees.. not another building in sight. It's amazing and most definitely not a shithole. Then the town's there if you want it... and they've found normal clubs playing decent music that don't cost £30 to buy a drink. And the weather's great. And there's lots of good cheap drugs if that floats your boat.

edit: and you can get a ferry to Barcelona.

Majorca and ibiza are both lovely if you travel to the more remote parts. I went to both with my parents a while ago and rented a car. Couldn't recommend the place more highly. suzuki jeeps are death traps, though.

@Katie, good luck with saving for the house. I had a really hard time getting all that sorted, being a contract worker for a university. Eventually I got it fixed and bought a nice place. The fact that I did is the only reason I could even consider starting a business because made some money on it.

I've only just cleared my postgraduate loans cos I got the house first. But then in Ireland it's usual for parents to fund their children through college so it's a bit easier to do.
