Rip It Up And Start Again
Anyone read/reading this?
Simon Reynold's book on Post Punk. I'm sure a lot of No Futureers would be interested in this. I've only read the intro so far, so perhaps its premature to post a thread on it, but I was quite interested in Reynolds' praising of the 'genre' by writing a whole book on it. His Energy Flash book was all misty-eyed about rave, but pretty scathing about 'post-rave' ie Squarepusher, Aphex and other chinstrokey 'IDM'. In this book, he's switched positions cos he loves post-punk bands like Talking Heads and Pere Ubu (who are to the Ramones like Autechre are to The Prodigy), while being critical of bands like the Pistols and the whole Punk movement. He also talks about how post punk was a reaction to punk, in that punk wanted to destroy cos there was 'no future', whilst post-punk wished to build a future, to 'rip it up and start again' (hence the title, I guess, though I think it's also an Orang Juice song). This also made me want to ask Emma how the name No Future came about. ........................... I like small speakers. I like tall speakers Power from the needle to the plastic |

I knew that - but since emma and cristian seem to be big fans of Wire et al, it's seems a strange choice for a name.

the 'no future' refrain comes from God Save The Queen, and we were listening to the Pistols a lot at the time (drinking gin and falling over). it just seemed appropriate - it's not a nihilist thing but expresses the idea that there is no future except for the one you make for yourself - DIY, etc. we were around a lot of subcultural entrepreneurs running alternative businesses in brighton and we thought we could do it too. i still love the punks even if i prefer post-punk music - and john lydon straddles both punk and post-punk so im happy to have the name... |

I'm reading Julian Cope's autobiographies on loan from Steev.. just finished "Head On" and just started "Repossessed". "Head On" is mainly about the Liverpool punk scene and was really good. There's a double edition:-
