nord modular g2 delay shift register modules

actually i find this module a bit confusing.
i am not really sure for what purpose i could use it. maybe it could be useful to control the routing of an audio signal to different effect processing units within a patch...

the manual says, the delay shift register module is useful to store controller data for example notes...

does anyone have some more experience in using this module?

Lend me your G2 for a month and I'll write you some example patches

hehehehe. yes i am a noob to it.
i am used to the reaktor world.

well, i think i will do some more experiments with controller values tonight.

at first i thought that this module would be good to route audio through. now i think it is better for cv.

Its like a clock divider but for control signals. The input signal is delayed by x amount of clock pulses. On the sr8 you get 8 fixed length outputs, each a single click pulse apart. On the sr32 you get one output with varaible delay length.

It is one of the modules in the cut down demo version, so you could play with it there.

You use it for clocked delay of data values. Similar concept to sample & hold, but with multiple registers. With each clock pulse the data value moves forward one register.

Say you wanted several oscillators playing the same sequence, but shifted in time. You could clock the control voltage and gate signal to a couple of shift registers, and control one oscillator from output 1, another from output 4, another from output 8.

If you know something about digital logic (which I don't!) you can use it as a general memory module for digital control.

thanks- these are already very helpful answers. :-)
so i should also deal with digital logic i guess.

I take it the G2 has more memory for modules? There's a really small limit to the number of modules you can have on the NM (128 mebbe?)... if you start building stuff with logic gates, S/H etc you run out of patch memory long before you run out of DSP. It's a real shame.

I'm not sure what the limit on the amount of modules is but remember you can buss audio from slot to slot if you run out of space on 1 slot. If you want you can make 1 mega patch that uses all 4 slots.

No, it's the same deal with the NMG2. I think the limiting factor is the number of input/output signal jacks in a patch. The G2 has a bunch of 'prepackaged' modules as a way to avoid that limitation - like the string oscillator or DX7 operators.

You could build those in the NM1 using tuned delays and sine oscillators, but you'd run out of I/O jacks if you started piling them up. Same deal with the A/D and D/A converters, which I haven't even started using yet.

Totally stupid question for other G2 owners: on the original Nord Mod you could load a patch across multiple DSP slots to increase polyphony. Can you not do this on the G2? I couldn't find it in the manual the other day. You can do this by using the voice counter module and sending MIDI across to another slot, but I'm wondering if I'm missing an easier way.

Can't you? Thought you could, it's been over a year since I sold mine...

(checking the manual...)

Yeah, check the voice allocation diagram in appendix 9 of the G1 manual. They don't explain it clearly, but it looks like if you have an empty slot and request more polyphony in a patch, voices can spill over into another slot.

I've mostly used both the G1 and G2 in mono mode, so this isn't something I've often run into...

Okay, found it for the G2. If you have a deactivated slot and request more polyphony in an active slot, it will automatically assign voices in the deactivated slot. I thought you had to set this up manually for some reason. It's on page 18 of the manual. Cool.

Ah yeah.. i remember this.. it does it automagically with spare DSP.. but in a wierd and rigid way. Thanks.
