hello,

we are currently adding the info on the website forum where you can participate.
As an estimation, a complete setup (Box+32 modules) will cost between 1000 and 1500 euros depending on the modules you choose and your physical location.
Delivery should start during June.
In the meantime visit the mawzer.com website to grab more info.

Sincerely,

Raphaël Mouneyres
MAWZER

He’s nicked my idea!

The basic idea is to have a choice of loads of different controllers, knobs, buttons, faders, XYpads and so on. They would clip to each other like lego and be configured through a main unit that would connect to your computer. Each unit would have some sort of visual display and should be robust enough for constantly clipping in and out of each other. You could build a system for the studio with loads of faders and knobs, for EQ and shit. And if you were playing live, un-clip parts of the mixer to build a live controller. The cool thing would be that you could build a controller with the exact components you need and could buy more bits when you’ve got the cash.

Not sure how much something like this would cost to manufacture though.

1500EU? That's a bit stiff, innit? For a fucking controller? You could buy a Notron for that price, or have Doepfer make you one up custom as well. I mean it's a flash piece of kit and all, but fuckin hell, it's just outsourced modules that cost less than a 50p each to make, maybe a quid for the more complex ones, say ten for the case and the plug board with the encoder board, rotary controller, and encoder that assigns the module values to MIDI controller numbers. It's a fuckin rip-off. Shouldn't even cost HALF of what they're asking.

For that amount right now I could buy this:

That's a handmade work of art by one of London's finest luthier's. So yeah, I'd say that that mawzer box is WELL overpriced.

You always pay more for stuff thats unique and not mass-produced. The Mawzer is clearly a unique product whether you like the idea of it or not, I think you already know that.

In fact that's precisely the point: the Mawzer is NOT uniquely hand-made. It's a bunch of mass produced sheet metal stampings with a pot or two, a tiny, cheap SMT board with a tiny bit of code on a PROM, and made to produce an extremely high profit if it sells at the aforementioned price point. Some of the modules are a bit more complex, but only barely. In fact they have to be fairly simple to work in a modular system such as this.

If it was actually hand-made, or even some sort of difficult and unique process involved in making it, I'd certainly be well in favor of supporting the innovation, and at face value it is a somewhat novel concept. However, knowing a bit about what it takes to make a device like this, as I'm sure you are as well, what a person pays for with a product like this is not in the materials, R&D, or manufacturing costs, but simply because the manufacturer beat others to the punch with a good idea and got the patents registered first. And for that, I think 1500EU is quite a lot. As I said, they could sell it for half the price and still pull a 600% profit margin MINIMUM.

It's a unique concept you nob, I never said it was hand made ffs. It's costly because they won't sell many because its a niche product. California is rotting your brain.

If it wasn't so bloody expensive it will be FAR less of a niche product, and something that everyelectronic producer, live performer and their uncle would want. A custom configurable control surface for any application or device that recieves MIDI? What's niche about that? It's brilliant. The price is the ONLY thing that makes it niche. If they drop the price to something reasonble, they'll sell LOADS.

Fair play. And if they manage to stay in business after a good price reduction, and after I've got a few other tools in my room, I'll probably pick up one of those systems meself.
