Beyer DT100’s are the shit! I acquired a pair a couple of months ago, and I like them loads. There industry standard, so that should count for something. Also, I would highly recommend Grado headphones. I had some SR60’s for a while (until some cunt lost them). Although they’re not professional studio headphones, they are extremely high quality and sound amazingly clear, though they’re not closed back. I’ll definitely be getting another pair when I can afford it.

AKG makes some proper headphones. the K240 is a good one, afaik pretty often used in radio/tv studios and sounding well allright.
i got me the K271 Studio and i like them loads, decent sound and allthough they are full closed they're pretty comfortable to wear. they also switch off when you take them off, which might be useful for monitoring while live-recording stuff.

I also really like the sony 7506's nice rugged great sounding headphones with really nice low end that are a little more portable then the beyers.

I use Sony 7509's, very nice to work with, you can get a little leakage if you use them for doing vocals but actually no more than DT100's.

thanks gents, this helps, i was looking at the sennheiser's, but wasnt sure. im not really doing that much acoustic work, and would really be using them for general mixing. the beyers sound nice, and sony 7506's are the ones that broke on me. and i agree the are sweet. i just would like more isolation, and detail.

cheers

I use Grado SR80's for monitoring and I highly recommend them. They sound very clear and detailed and allow me to hear everything going on in the mix. They have a neutral balance unlike many closed-back models.

Almost no isolation, but definitely more detail and accuracy than the Beyer, Sony or Sennheiser models. Still, I like the meaty slightly pumped up PA sound of the Sennheiser and they are very good about repairs and parts unlike Sony who are a bit mean.

A friend of mine who's opinion I deeply respect about audio related matters have suggested Sennheiser's HD270, as a cheaper alternative to the expensive Grado models (the ones for about 1000 USD, the HD270 sell for about 300 USD here).

i compared AKG K271 to Audio Technica ATH-M40fs and Sennheiser HD25 (okay, no real studio phones) recently, needing them for both studio work and live gigs, so they had to be closed.
sennheiser hd25 were quickly discarded, they just didn't feel so comfortable to me. after some long-time comparison, i was very unsure. the AKG K271 are definitely better, sounding more detailed and sitting more comfortable, but for me it wasn't worth twice the price of the Audio Technicas.
I own the AT for 2 weeks now and i'm pretty much convinced that this was no bad choice. if you have the money, however, go for the AKG, they are more servicable (regarding spare parts for example).

thanks again for the comments it helped. i picked the Beyer DT150’s. because the had a great dynamic range and were recommended by some friends that i got to try out. they sounded great. the price was in the middle 200 bucks, but i think im going to be happy. they are super comfortable too, which helps for the place i live in. thanks agian!

DTs are cool, you look like a real twat wearing them too which is always a bonus, especially if you are recording a vocalist, always good to make them look as stupid as possible
