And if so what and how ?

since most music is still recorded in 2-channels I think 5.1 sounds crappy...only for fun...

According to DVD-audio which also brings you a higher sample-rate and 24bit. you´ll have the opportunity to work with 6 individual channels. Think of recording/mastering in 6 channels..huh... could be wicked! Would bring out a new dimension of electronic music! -and the working metode!!
Now you have to think of WHERE the sound should be placed... and not only how it should sound!

I just mixed in 5.1 on pro tools at school. I like it. you can do some wicked things. you can make the sound come from everywhere. create a 3d audio spectrum. I think it would be nice for electronic music. you could automate sounds coming from behind you and then have it move around to the front. I think some cool things could come about from it. the next thing is 7.1 though.
that shit will be wicked.

the ambisone vst plugin lets you use surround sound I'm pretty sure.
You move the sound around a diagram of a head... can change the distance as well as the panning
