musical guilty pleasures

You may have seen or heard Sean Rowley's 'Guilty Pleasures' album - he is also doing a club night of the same name dedicated to resurrecting overlooked naff-but-nice records. Thing is, his stuff is all 70s and early 80s (10cc, stuff like that), so me and Mrs Knid got to discussing guilty pleasures from our era... an interesting debate, as we thought stuff like Billy Idol and Bon Jovi and Imagination were actually too cool to be really guilty pleasures... it's quite difficult to pin down what makes them guilty...

but here's a few that we came up with:

Wax - Bridge To Your Heart
Dire Straits - Romeo & Juliet
Freiheit - Keeping The Dream Alive
Paul McCartney - Tug Of War (the whole album!)
Deacon Blue - Dignity
Jennifer Rush - The Power Of Love

any more? I feel a mixtape coming on!

Dire Straits are a band I'm ashamed I like so much. But Romeo & Juliet.. Money For Nothing.. I love them.

the Flirts.
'I keep holding on' by Simply Red.
some Grateful Dead (when it's been around you since birth, you
begin to attribute it to growing up, so..don't hate)
'Dear Mr. Fantasy' by Traffic.
anything by Cream.

Yeah but... all those last three are musically ambitious, interesting things - I guess I'm talking about shallow, pop type music...

The 'guilty' word is a bit bollocks though - I'm not ashamed of anything that I like... if you do start with that, then you get into the whole 'so bad it's good' bullshit, which is rubbish.

heres a few... but i dont feel guilty about songs i love... these are all guilt free pleasures (i do smirk at my own cheesiness though sometimes )

bill medley and jennifer warnes - i`ve had the time of my life... absolutely wonderful song that makes me overemotional every time i hear it
wham - fantastic... mainly for club tropicana and wham rap, i even know all the lyrics to wham rap (how cool am i?) haha
shania twain - man! i feel like a woman... i love singing this, its a good job i cant sing well or i would do a cover of it in a heartbeat.
'you`re still the one' is ace too
natasha bedingfield - these words... top song and lovely skirts... shes got it all.
toni basil - mickey... blinding party tune, loved this since i was a kid
forrest - rock the boat... ace record and totally reminds me of slush puppies at tiffany`s discotheque under 18`s night in blackpool when i was a 4th year.
can madonna records be classed as guilty pleasures? i adore everything she did up to justify my love.
daphne and celeste - ooh stick you... i love this song so much and they`re so cute and they got bottled off at that horrid festival... poor mites.

Yeah... that's good pop that is... I heard it during a period of enforced Radio1 listening whilst travelling in someone's car... only thing I heard in 5 hours or so that wasn't crap... Reminded me of Nelly Furtado "Turn off the light" which I also liked.

pat benetar - heartbreaker -- perfect for those cheesy high school jazz dance performances

'cum on feel the noize' reminds me of the school bus for some reason

shannon 'let the music play' i dont care if the kids today might think
it's cheesy, this was the ultimate party song

edit:

joan osborne - 'what if god was one of us... just a stranger on the bus..." so contemplative

new kids on the block - 'hang tough'

no im just kidding about that one

todays music, i do listen to all the bubblegum pop stuff, from jojo (well she is talented) to lil jon to ashlee simpson. . but i only hear the popular stuff.

Will Young - Leave Right Now
Dire Straits - Money for Nothing
Abba - Fernando
Europe - Final Countdown
T'Pau - China in your Hand
My sisters and I also had a strange fondness for Neil Diamond when we were little... my youngest sister still plays the tape I believe.

No, it most certainly does not! Kate Bush is a genius, never be ashamed.

I've managed to purge myself of all shameful feelings relating to music consumption - except, bizarrely, The Eagles. I fucking love the Eagles, but don't even own any due to some sort of weird MOR stigma. And Billy Joel, his early stuff was great.

That's what comes of early music conditioning - both these artists featured heavily in my formative years.

Aerosmith - Dream on

It was on a great Skateboard video called 'Second hand smoke' from years back, watched endless times with MDK and JP... It was on Rodney Mullens section, who is an uberskater..so that kind of ground it into my consciousness.

One of these days Steev.. I'm just going to snap and ram my gatefold sleeve of Nursery Chryme up your arse

I like Peter Gabriel's band Genesis... up to 1974.. the early Phil Collins stuff isn't half as offensive as his later arsepiss.. but it's very dull compared to the Peter Gabriel stuff.

Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is a fucking great album... that Eno/Gabriel combination.

Less of it Taylor.

I used to be a massive Kate Bush fan when I was at school... I think that photo of her in the leotard helped. I remember heading off into town at lunchtime to buy "Sensual World" as soon as it was released... it has a double groove... one is the instrumental version. They both start the same though... so you can't tell which one you're going to get until it's been playing for a while... and it doesn't mention this on it.. the first time I played it, there was a vocal... the next time I played it, the vocal had vanished... utterly freaked me out.
