Placing effects in a frequency range

A bit of a long shot this but, there is Slices Tech talk by Stefan Betke (pole) where he talks about all the *obvious* things he learnt from Dub music like:

: chaining compressors together on your bass
: placing all your effects in a set frequency range

> unfortunately they seem to have taken the interview down however, with regards to the second point : id never heard of this before and was wondering if anyone else had and could elaborate? (such as was he referring to placing an eq first in your effects channel and filtering or grouping you instruments by their frequency range and only applying certain effects to those?)

like i say this was a new philosophy on me, so sorry if its obvious, and of course i know there are know hard set rules (blah blah bla.) but his statement fascinated me.

just wish i could find the video.

It is common to filter signals before they go through a certain effect, if you don't want to have all of its range to be effected. It is also common to filter effects on the return to make them sit better in the mix. Mostly you won't need the bottom end of your reverbs or in the oppositte maybe you just want the bottom. I think it is up to to your imagination how you do it, but they did these things long before dub music. Dub music is using these techniques more likely as an instrument. It gets part of the composition, rather then a mixing technique.

im suppose im still blown away that I can talk about effects chains, compressors on each channel and such things..dont think ive ever got over the idea that electronic music is made by people with amiga's and a couple of analogue synths.

home music has come a long way even if i haven't!

(btw : dont think he was implying that it was strictly a dub thing, but just something he learnt from it, like your love of techno helping you to understand Steve Reich or the Velvet Underground if you know what i mean)

Well I Don't know, I listened Velvet Underground and Steve Reich before I got seriously into techno. But I understand what you or he is saying. In Dub music effects are really explored into their extremes, so you have to put a lot of attention to them, when placing them into the mix.

Today's possibilities let you work with all this stuff that is true. And also, a lot of people built up serious studios. Just look at Cristians studio how it looked or a good example is my colleague Petar Dundov. I do all my mixdowns at his studio and he just bought this:

He literally started with an ASR10 and a synth, 20 years ago .
