Fusion in Lärz/ tips for a trip to Berlin

I decided to go to Fusion Festival. It's at the end of June and I'll be popping into Berlin either on the way there or the way back.

Does anyone have any tips for stuff to do in Berlin? I'm thinking along the lines of museums, art galleries, record shops, flea markets etc rather than crazy techno parties (although those too are welcome, but I'm going to have to pace myself a bit!) Obviously I can google but I prefer to get recommendations from humans

Also, if there's anyone on the board who feels like meeting up either at the party or in Berlin for a beer (but NOT a currywurst) give me a shout

I'm generally about and my June looks pretty empty right now...

East Side Gallery is always worth a look (the last standing bit of Berlin wall), is free, and is also a nice walk alongside the river in the summer. also there's still a few beach bars left there where you can pick up a wee refreshment.

Volkspark Freidrichshain is also a cool summer hangout, particularly when us berlin types get together to grill & drink beer on a sunday afternoon.

I'd also recommend the Berlinische Galerie (Alte Jakobstraße 124, Kreuzberg) for modern art, and there is a great Photography gallery by Zoologicher Garten station which is also worth a look.

Also there seems to be a lot of new small galleries springing up along Karl Marx Allee, where you can also witness Russia's legacy in east Berlin, some awe inspiring Social Realist architecture.

Cheap food & drinks, I recommend the centre of Friedrichshain, if you draw a square between Frankfurter Allee, Warschauer Strasse, Revaler Strasse and Mainzer Str./Gärtner Str. basically inside that quadrant you'll find everything you need. Also it's within walking distance of the main area of clubs (R.A.W. Gelände- consisting of M.I.K.Z., Cassiopea, R.A.W. Temple, Astra and Suicide Circus and assorted squat styled bars).. Berghain is not much further on neither. Be sure to check Sanotorium 23 on Frankfurter Allee also..

If you like jumping in a lake when it's hot, one of my favourite things to do in the summer is to visit one of the many Freibads (Outdoor swimming pools), which are mainly Lakes but run like swimming pools (tested water, lifeguards etc), my favourite being Orankesee, which is only 20 minutes by the M4 tram from Alexanderplatz, 4 euros in for the day, a cafe where you can buy food, drinks including beer, icecream, and a nice sandy beach & 2 water slides.

Also check out Wannsee if you like walking in the forest, great for if you've had enough of the city and want to get away from it all for an afternoon..

I should write a guide book to Berlin I guess

Flea markets: Boxhagner Platz, RAW Gelände and the obvious one in Mauerpark all on a sunday. There used to be a fruit & Veg & food market on Boxi on a saturday, not sure if it still happens..

oh, and don't bother with the DDR museum by the river unless you're REALLY interested in the DDR regime as otherwise it's a bit of a rip-off entry wise.. I think the Stasi museum in Lichtenberg might be a better bet if you're interested in that sort of thing..

That's great, thanks, perhaps you should write a guidebook!

I noticed that Tasceles (spelling?) got sold or something, but I guess there are other squatty type places about still..

Tacheles is actually still running somehow, they tried to clear it out a couple of weekends ago, but a flashmob of ravers showed up, and I think they've been keeping some kind of vigil (with a techno soundtrack) ever since. But to be honest, even the legal places here quite often have a squatty vibe.

Remembered another one for you, check it, it's a computer game museum:

Went to the Computerspielmuseum the other day with a mate- Had read some crap write-ups on the place which I can only assume were written by someone who had never had any interest in computer games ever, given that there is an original Space Invaders machine, original Gauntlet, original Asteroids, original Frogger and about 4 other stand up coin up machines which you don't need to put coins in but can actually play as many times as you want. that alone was worth the 8€ entry fee considering you would have probably had to have put 50 euro cents in to play it back in the day (or 2 DM as it appeared to be then). You can see also the GDR's only ever attempt at a coin op, play on just about every home game system going, and on top of that, read about the history (from a German perspective at least) of computer games. totally top IMO only let down by the omission of the GTA series. there is a nice "beach bar" next door also and a cocktail bar across the road...

Germany's stance on banning violent videogames keeps things interesting.

Visited this place the other day:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beelitz...ilst.C3.A4tten

about an hour outside of Berlin. you can't get inside the bigger buildings now, but inside the smaller buildings I discovered the walls had been wallpapered with old copies of Pravda and some newspaper which appeared to be called something like "Sovietski armee", both obviously Russian.. strange place..

I didn't end up doing any of the things you suggested but nonetheless had a wicked time. Will do at least some of those things next visits, 'cos I ´know we'll be going back loads.

And the food oh Jesus the food. I was in falafel heaven.

Fusion was ace too, vibe about the same as Castlemorton/Glastonbury 92. And German ravers are pretty special.
